@VAnaturelover:  I agree that 1 hour is too far away for a reception venue.

If you go towards Charlottesville, things will become expensive very quickly.  To better answer your question- are you wanting an indoor location with an outdoorsy vibe or an outdoor location?  If outside, tent?  Park shelter?

If you don’t feel comfortable typing details here, feel free to PM me.  I’m from VA and my best friend went to JMU, so I know that area fairly well.

ETA: What’s your budget for the reception site?

Well… I don’t know too much about the area.. other than that I hike up there ALL the time. I don’t know how the parks work, but maybe you could find something with them? I know there’s national parks (prob can’t do much there) but there has to be campgrounds or resorts with facilities you can vamp up. Or you could find a farmer that’s willing to rent out his field and you can set up a tent?? You may think I’m kidding but I know someone who did that and their wedding was beautiful! but yea there’s not much out in H’burg but JMU, farms, and mountains.

Also what about Massanutten??? Do they have a place where you can hold an event?

Hi! I looked into Barren Ridge and Hermitage Hill which are in the Waynesboro/Fishersville area, but seem to be influenced by Charlottesville pricing ):

Your description made me think of Hungry Mother State Park… It has a couple of lovely wedding sites in the park and lots of cabins and lodges for guests. But too far from you. Would another stare park like Douthat be an option?

Would you be able to consider having your entire event in a different city (so people don’t have to drive from a ceremony in Hburg to a reception elsewhere)?  I say this because that region of Virginia is absolutely GORGEOUS and there are wineries & vineyards allllll over the place.  Check out http://www.virginiawine.org/ and see if there are any other locations that do work with your budget & location.

Also, I know you said you had no luck with state parks, but what about Harrisonburg City parks?  http://www.harrisonburgva.gov/parks-recreation They may or may not have the capacity you need, but it’s worth a look 🙂

Best of luck!  I wish I knew that area better and I could offer more specific suggestions.

Hi! My fiance and I are living in Texas but I’m actually from VA and we’re having our wedding there on May 25, 2013. We’re going to have the reception at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. I don’t know if you’ve looked into it, they have both a pavillion and an octagonal barn. We looked at the other venues you mentioned but they are very expensive for what they provide compared to the museum, and we thought the museum was more unique. The barn seats about 120 people with area to put additional tables outside. I think the barn rents for about 800 for the top floor. You might want to look into it 🙂
