Does anyone have an elongated cushion cut? Something with a L/W ratio of 1.2 or 1.3? I am trying to decide between that and an oval, as I really like the elongated look. See above for comparison pics.
Any other thoughts or advice?

i have an oval and it’s my perfect ring–especially since we just got my wedding band and i wanted a twist–the rounded shape goes really well together.
i must say though, i’m really smitten with the elongated cushion. I do have a friend who just got a cushion and complained that unless it’s VERY clean, it can look a little dull.
both are totally gorgeous though 🙂

@nicolejamie: I am a round-lover, so I’d vote for the oval! Not that you asked, I just don’t have any pictures. Sorry!

@nicolejamie: i dont think ive actually seen an elongated cushion cut….very cool. I vote that one since ive neverseen one. Just a thought you should add a pole, you’ll likelyget more opinions that way.

I have neither, but just thought I would comment with my opinion (and I know what those are like, lol). I personally like the oval more than the elongated cushion. I love a nice squared cushion cut stone. But something about the elongated cushion looks awkward to me … Like its trying to mimic an emerald cut but came up narrow or something. Can’t put my finger on it.
Most important though – which do YOU love? That is what you should go with.

@nicolejamie: oh just hada thought, have you considered a radiant cut? They can be quite beautiful, sparkly and elongated!

My two favorite shapes! I really wanted an elongated old mine cushion but I just couldn’t find one that fit all of my qualifications for my budget. My bf doesn’t like ovals (he said they reminded him of his great aunts? lol) but I really like those too. I’d say if you can find a cushion that will face up the size you want and you can find good color (cushions hold color more than most other shapes), go for it! Also make sure you go to the jeweler with a clear idea of whether you want “crushed ice” (modified) or the more chunkier facet plot (cushion brilliant or old mine)…I did a lot of research before coming up short lol. Both of these shapes are so elegant and beautiful, you really can’t go wrong. Pretty band too 🙂 Good luck!

Ladies, thank you!! I’m feeling a bit torn between these options, but leaning slightly towards the oval. Am I right in saying that an oval will sparkle more? Perhaps look larger? The only drawback is that it seems like ovals are a bit priceier and harder to come by than the cushions.

@quirkysocialite – how do you tell if a cushion is crushed ice versus the old mine?

I love ovals. I find them very flattering on everyone as the shape tends to elongate the look of your finger so gracefully.

I have an elongated cushion and I love it! My advice would be to try both of these shapes on to make sure you like how they look in person.
Here’s mine for reference. I think it has a 1.19 ratio from what I remember.
It sparkles like a champ In My Humble Opinion, but you are right that most cushions (especially cushion modified brilliant cuts) face up slightly smaller than their round brilliant or oval counterparts of the same carat weight. It was worth the trade off for me though, because I adore the cushion shape.

some of it comes down to setting. If you’re using the pave setting shown, I really like the look of the oval better.

Def oval. They face up larger than cushions for the same carat weight and I find the roundness more appealing than an elongated cushion.

I’m loving the oval! it is a less common cut, and faces up larger than a long cushion. Love it!!
