A bit of a vent….
FH and I were able to re-visit the church where we will be marrying and holding our reception while we were on vacation at Christmas. I’m so happy we’ve decided to move the reception from the fellowship hall to the gym. It will allow us to have about 100 more people…which is desperately needed since we’re inviting the whole congregation (it’s at his home church). However, now the issue is how do we decorate a gym? We have thought about renting a parachute to suspend from the ceiling and create a mock canopy. My concern is that may make the room too dark since the windows won’t be visible then. We are getting married at 1:00 and the recieption will be immediately following.
Also, (one more vent) I had bought glass cake plates and table runners to be part of the decoration for the 20 or so tables and now they won’t be able to be used since we will have closer to 30 tables. AND I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THE BUDGET ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!
I’m done. Thanks for “listening,” Hive. 😉

Can you buy similar or matching table runners for the other 10 tables? It might look odd if 1/30 were different but if 10/30 are different it will look intentional.
Are you having dancing? A parachute may make it feel more like night time, and less like the afternoon and may get people more in the spirit to dance and let their hair down.

Normally i would suggest strings of lights, but for an afternoon wedding that might not work.
A cute idea I’ve seen done is hanging umbrellas, either right side up or upside down
You can use paper lanterns
or lanterns and umbrellas

@missbee15: You may want to look into hiring a rental company to hang light colored drapery around the the inside of the gym to create a more romantic & soft feel. I think that coupled with one of the hanging ceiling options that julies1949 posted would really transform the room.
Can you buy more cake plates and runners? Even if they are not exactly the same I would definitely use the ones you already have. Maybe the 10 new runners/cake plate can be used on the tables of immediate family or “special” guests and folks will think you did it intentionally rather than as a last resort.
