It means that you would have the rights to print your own copies of the photos, put them online, etc.  I think each photographer has their own parameters of what this means. Owning the rights usually includes a cd/dvd of all your images.  If you don’t own the rights it is illegal for you to print your own copies; you are supposed to go through the photographer and pay them to have them printed.

Like Mandalynn says, you’ll be able to have the image files in your possession and you’ll be able to print them at the lab of your choice, post them on facebook, etc.

Otherwise, you’d have to purchase each picture individually from your photographer at anywhere from $7-$20ish dollars per 4×6.

You’ll want the rights to the pictures, trust me.  Some photographers include it in their packages, while others charge for it as an upgrade.

It’s definitely something to consider when narrowing the field of possible photographers.

My photographer said that a women once entered her picture in a photo contest and won money for my photographer’s picture. That’s why many photographers give printing rights, but not full rights. They don’t want others to profit off of their work.
