I’ve had this pain in my butt for over a month now and was hoping it would go away but hasn’t. I haven’t seen a doctor due to lack of insurance and orginally thinking it was just a pulled muscle, but the issue really hasn’t gotten better.
The pain is down my right buttock, starting just below my waistline (pant not natural) and ending at the top of my leg. It’s kinda a dull pain all the time, but if I bend over to tie my shoe or pick something up it becomes shooting and hurts like crazy! It also hurts when sitting sometimes, but I stand all day at work so I don’t really notice it then…just more with bending/stretching. It feels deep which is why I orinally thought it was an over used muscle.
Anyone ever experience anything like this? Any suggestions as to what it could be?

It could be sciatica, although the fact it doesn’t hurt when you stand makes me think it might not be.
If it is a muscle, you could just be re-injuring it and not realize it.
But, I’m not a doctor…so take what I say with a grain of salt 🙂

I agree that it sounds like it could be a muscle. It might be tight and you end up pulling it every time you are sitting. I’m not sure how to make it go away though.

I’m going to agree with @bethesdabride… Sounds like sciatica. Get a tennis ball and sit on it (I know, sounds weird) but it will help! Roll it around on that spot. It probably won’t feel the greatest, but it should help. I would still check with your doctor, though.
Good luck! :]

I have sciatica and have very similar issues. I agree with bethesdabride that that’s what it is. This will hurt but every night you need to set aside time to stretch your hamstrings, your hips, and your back. Once you get into a routine of doing this it should really help. But, if it doesn’t go away or continues to get worse you really should go to a doctor.. maybe a free clinic in your area?

Thanks for the responses! I too thought it sounded like sciatica.
My routine hasn’t changed recently or anything so I really didn’t think it was a pulled muscle (although you can pull one doing anything), but rather something else. I looked up some information on sciatica and it does sound similar except I’m not in the usual age group it falls under, but that doesn’t really mean anything.
@bethesdabride: It’s not that it doesn’t hurt at all while standing, it’s just a dull bearable pain. It’s much worse when that region gets strected.

If the shooting pain goes down the back of your legs it could be a herniated disk. Easily remedied. 90% of people with this issue do not require surgery. I read this ins the Oprah magazine and thought of your post!

@artichoke: Thanks for the input. It actually just stays in my buttock region haha, but thanks again for the suggestion.

hey — I had this! it was called “piriformis syndrome” — which is basically just a pulled muscle deep in your hip/buttock area. I went to physical therapy for about 5 weeks – and all they did was massage it (with their elbow) and have me do A LOT of streching…. The tennis ball idea was good too to rub out the muscle…. good luck!

I’m agreeing with sciatica. When I was pregnant I had that same pain, ended up limping, and it was becuase my baby was pinching that nerve. Have your Fiance do a deep tissue massage on it, rub some icy hot to relieve any possible swelling, and try to stretch.
