This is a normal side effect of those pills.

Try drinking prune juice and eating prunes to help it along. I would ask the doc what other med you can try to help it along. Drink plenty of water.  I find hot water helps even more.

Lol, your title caught my eye

It is the Iron Pills (lol they call it IRON for a reason).  Consult with your Doctor (or at least the Nurse at the Office) they can give you info suited for you and your circumstance (be that diet, or stool softener) … as they know you best.

You are pregnant… and should not be self medicating.  You Dr should be aware of whatever you are putting into / onto your body (all meds including OTC – vitamins – herbal supplements etc – creams / preparations – hair dye – alcohol – cigarettes, etc), so they can advise you best for your baby.

Hope this helps,

PS… You don’t want to be “straining” for a bm, this is not a good thing for your pregnancy.

I reiterate what This Time Round said. Even though meds suggested by other Bees may be safe to take, you should be taking advice ONLY from your doctor or pharmacist when you are pregnant.

It is important to read the side effects of any mediction including supplements and take preventative measures against constipation. Lots of water, lots of fibre. Prunes and prune juice will help just as fast as stool softeners.

Nooo, don’t push too hard to try and poop, I did this and popped a blood vessel on my cervix and had BRIGHT red, GUSHING bleeding, aka, pretty much a heart attack and thought I was having a miscarriage. It was very scary!

I was also taking Zofran for nausea and even quit the iron prenatals (I took the gummy ones) and that didn’t help at all. I tried apples, prune juice, fiber supplements, walking, drinking more water, etc. etc. You name it, I probably tried it. None of that helped.

I finally resorted to meds to help me out. I tried one colace stool softener a day, didn’t work. I tried 2 a day, still didn’t work.  Honestly, I finally got so miserable that I did an enema, and it made me feel SOOOO MUCH BETTER! I literally hadn’t had a good bowel movement in 2 weeks when I finally did the enema.

However, you obviously can’t just do those every day, so (per my OBs recommendation) started taking a capful of Mirilax everyday ON TOP OF the 2 colace stool softeners.  And guess what? It STILL didn’t help that much, I was going poop almost everyday without having to strain, but it was still hard pebble poop, and not very much of it at all.

Guess what finally worked for good? Stopping the Zofran when the nausea was over with. Literally, you might just have to suck it up and be constipated if you are taking it. I decided being incredibly nauseous was way worse than being constipated, so I kept taking it until I didn’t need it anymore and used glycerine suppositories when I was starting to feel really backed up again.

It sucks to be super constipated, but DON’T push super really hard to try and poop or you will probably start bleeding like I did and have a mini heart attack like I did!

As others have said, contact your Dr’s office and they can tell you if any OTC meds are safe for you.

I haven’t had your problem, but was aware that it happens during pregnancy so I’ve added a few things to my diet each day to try to prevent this. The things that work for me are kiwis and ground flax seed (added to my oatmeal or yogurt). I’ve also been told that you have less of a chance of constipation if you take the prenatal vitamins that come with the DHA supplement. The Omega oils in the DHA supplement help keep you regular.

My godson’s mother took lots of fiber and a tablespoon of oil every day and it seemed to help her.

Do NOT push! My personal advice–give an enema a try. I would just use warm water.

@Glow girl:  metamucil and other fibres (all-bran etc.), paired with lots of water, are supposed to help but they didn’t help me much. The only thing that did the trick was a cup of coffee.

Also keeping active helps with keeping you regular. Try going for a short run and then a cup of coffee?
