It all hurts for me. Always. I usually bleed after. I swear, the doctors are great, though. Ugggghhhh. It makes me shudder to think about it.

ETA: Both parts. They hurt. A lot.

For me, it’s depended on the doctor. Female doctors have always been great, quick, easy, relatively comfortable (or as comfortable as you’re going to get in that situation). I had a male doctor for a few years and it was the only time it hurt and I bled after a pap. I was SO glad for so many reasons when I was able to get in with a female doctor instead!!!

If it’s close to that time of the month it does seem to hurt a little bit more for me.  But it’s never been what I would call painful.

Not to sound odd – but if you haven’t had sex for a while you’re not going to be as, um, stretched.  . .that can affect it too.

I know I can say this until the cows come home and it won’t matter, your best bet is to relax.  Luckily, it’s pretty fast and then it’s over.  It’s totally worth putting up with the pain, though, considering how important it is for catching things like pre-cancerous cells.

@AB Bride:  There are plastic speculums too.  I’m sure she had to use one or else she would not have been able to get to your cervix.

If you’ve never had anything up there before (like a penis) it’s likely due to you not being ‘stretched’ out. It’s not like sex, but at the same time it’s like sex in the way there’s this big forgein thing inside you and your parts need to strech to accomodate.

I have no advice that would help… except make sure your DR is using a lubrication! (not sure if it’s standard… I’d hope so!) and tell your dr when it hurts and to go slow.

I agree to relax and just remember how short it is.  I had a friend who told me it hurt her so bad the first time she went that she wanted to pass out.  It’s only hurt me twice, once the swab hurt and felt rough and the last time the whole thing was painful was at the beginning of my pregnancy.  I’ve always just found it uncomfortable though.

Mine always hurt, too. My doctor has to use the smallest speculum, and is always as sensitive as possible. She uses lubrication, and talks me through the whole thing so that nothing “surprises” me. I just try to be as relaxed as possible, and weird as it sounds, I close my eyes and pretend it’s Fiance.Embarassed Thinking about him makes it a little easier.
