After our total house reno, it is almost time to paint! Woo-hoo! I can’t wait…right now the parts of the house that are not fresh drywall are pretty much all just “builder” colors…very, very neutral and boring. I know that putting “our” colors in will make the place feel even more like home.
I am 13w pregnant and I would like to help in the painting if it is safe to do so. I found some low-odor, zero voc paint if that would make any difference. I know lots of women paint the nursery, but I haven’t met any that have painted the whole house.
I would love to do this if I could….I haven’t been able to help much thus far because all the other stuff hasn’t really been pregnancy friendly.
What do you think, bees?

My doctor said as long as it was well-ventilated and I took frequent breaks, I should be fine. Call and ask your doctor, but the zero VOC paint and open windows are your friends.

I painted when I was 5 months pregnant. I made sure that all the windows were open while I painted the rooms and they would stay open for a few hours afterwards.
Most importantly. Take breaks. You don’t want to work yourself too hard.

I was told to stay away from painting. My mother wouldn’t even let me paint the nursery, so she painted it herself while I painted the decorations 🙂

Painting with the windows is something I suggest ragardless of pregnant or not. If you are super concerned, make sure that wear a mask or also have fans turned on for extra ventilation. There is also eco-friendly paint as well, I believe. Also, if you have any special medical conditions you may also have to ask your doctor. I would say ask your doctor, if doctor says it’s okay then when you go into the store also let them know you are pregnant and that you would also like to know if they have masks or any good tips and also ask about baby and kid friendly paints, that way you cover ALL of your bases for now and the future!

I just painted 4 rooms of our new apartment yesterday… not by myself, of course… with hubby and a friend. I used Behr paint and there was virtually NO smell or fumes to it.
I checked with my doctor before doing so and his words to me were “go for it… you’re perfectly fine painting.” I even suggested to him that I will wear a mask and he told me not to bother, that it might actually make me more nauseous.

@tnbellebee: I wouldn’t, but thats just me. I dont like the idea of breathing in all the chemicals. I think candy_nee (or maybe somone else) posted that their OB advised against it. I think the effects are pretty unknown but I am trying to limit as much as possible exposure to chemicals while pregnant. I saw this article basically saying the same thing.
