Has anyone ever hung them and not lit them? I bought 50 in 10″ and 12″ from China on Ebay to hang in our tent (40×80). I imagine they will go above the dance floor. The tent company wanted to charge an arm and a leg to rent and hang lit. They said if I bought my own, they would hang unlit for really cheap Does this take away from them if they are unlit? I mean, they are lanterns. I have read posts before about getting the LED lights to put in there and this also seems like a lof of time and $.

If you want to light them, I’ve got lots of alternatives at this link. You could also hang them unlit. The only question is what time of day your reception will be, and what lighting there will be in the tent. If you are having an evening reception, the lanterns may be more or less invisible if all the lighting is near ground level.
You might see what the company would charge to hang thelanterns on a string of white Christmas lights. That might give you the light you want at a reasonable cost.

We are hanging white paper lanterns with fishing line from strings of white lights up inside a 40×100 ft. tent. We are not putting lights inside them because we are using uplighting on the walls and ceiling and the lanterns take on the color of whatever color is used.

I think the paper lanterns will still look great even if they aren’t lit. Maybe you could hang them with ribbons to make them stand out. Could you also hang regular Christmas lights to help them light up more?
