I am looking at the costs for draping a tent or using a ton of paper lanterns to cover the ceiling. I have been quoted at $1,440 for the draping and want to see if buying the lanterns and installing them ourselves would be worth a price difference or not.
Have any of you done this technique? Do you have any tips? Also- how many would you think I’d need to have a bunch in the top? I want to order different sizes, so of course that makes things difficult.
Let me know! Thanks!

Hmm. Depends on whether or not you want to save time or money. I did my friend’s wedding for less than half that price, (tulle included, all the lantern sizes are the same): http://www.flickr.com/photos/fubabee/2197213329/in/set-72157610887652502/
If you want to DIY, the best thing to do is to draw up a sketch, then measure out what sizes you want, how far apart you’d like the lanterns to be, and how many sizes of each lantern you’d need to get.
Just remember that the tents are quite high, and if you’re trying to fill up the entire ceiling it would be a heck of a lot of work (not to mention electricity, in which you’ll have to think about a generator if you want to light each one). For a more intimate setting, you can lower the ceiling by installing the light cords lower. Hope that helps!

I bought some paper lanterns for my tent too, do they have to be lighted? And if you did did you buy leds and batteries or used something else to light them?

What I think I might do is fill the tent with lanterns and do a wash over the white lanterns…
This is a link to another bride that got married where I am…scroll down to see the pictures in the tent. (She had them professionally installed and it costed over $2500)
Also…have you ever seen a happier bride?!?!?!! God I hope I’m that happy on my day!

You might want to check what we are doing, at this link. Paper Lantern Store was by far the cheapest source for the lanterns themselves. We are using simple (and cheap!) LED lights with them.

whats the best way to hang a lot of them in a tent? I want a lot, but scattered, different sizes and different hieghts. The only way I can think of is hang a lot of wire and taking a whole lot of time … there has to be an easier way…right? I am probably just being very hopeful!
Any advice would be great!

My fiancè and I are also wanting to do (various sized) paper lanterns hung at various heights for our tented reception. We will be having a 40′ x 80′ white poled tent. Our problem is figuring out how many lanterns and in what size?
I’ve seen people mention 14″ lanterns, but can’t find any in the color/style we are going for. Our optons are 8″, 12″, 16″ 20″, and 24″. At first, we were going to do a bunch of 12″ sized lanterns with our accent color in 8″. I’m worried, though, that those sizes may be too small. But is 16″ too big?
