I think it would be fine. Can you get those cottony paper napkins some chain restaurants have (off the top of my head, i can only think of Cheddar’s having them).

I saw these cute origami napkins at thinkgeek.com yesterday. Could make very cool bar napkins.

I think is great to have paper napkins, you can get the long ones at http://www.partycity.com , guest towels ( which are long pPer napkins too) or just the long ones, in the color you want. You can even use a nap king ring or just fold them nicely Good Luck.

I haven’t voted yet. Personally I normally prefer linen. Though it does largely depend on what your food is for your wedding. For example if you’re having finger greasy/meaty food and so are heavily relying on the paper napkins they can just fall apart and you then end up in more of a mess.

i think the linen-like napkins would be better (i voted paper before you updated the poll). you said it was semi-formal, so I would shy away from 3-ply paper.

i think the linen-like is a good compromise. you can be relatively certain that one napkin will be enough (unlike paper) and it will look decent without costing a bundle.

We did paper – no one even batted an eye – in fact, I got lots of people telling me how cute they are. I think it’s about the napkins you choose and how you dress the rest of the table. It’s definitely cheaper though, I got mine off UK ebay from a woman in Kent. I got 100, plus shipping to Australia – definitely cheaper than hiring linens. Plus, for our wedding, linens just wouldn’t have fit!
