My wedding is semi-formal and I’m debating between paper napkins and linen/cloth napkins.
Everything else would be real as far as the glassware, plates, and silverware but I would hate to pay the cost for linen napkins.
Is it okay to have paper napkins if they’re folded nicely and personalized?
ETA: So basically there are 3 options, 3ply paper guest towels, linen like napkins, linen/cloth napkins.
The paper ones I’m considering look like this: http://www.mypapershop.com/953122.html
The linen like ones look like this: http://www.smartyhadaparty.com/Item8242-Tuxedo_Fold_Dark_Burgundy_Red_Dinner_Napkins.aspx
Of course, most of us know what linen/cloth napkins look like. I’m trying to be cost efficient while maintaining the same level of formality.

I think it would be fine. Can you get those cottony paper napkins some chain restaurants have (off the top of my head, i can only think of Cheddar’s having them).
I saw these cute origami napkins at thinkgeek.com yesterday. Could make very cool bar napkins.

I think is great to have paper napkins, you can get the long ones at http://www.partycity.com , guest towels ( which are long pPer napkins too) or just the long ones, in the color you want. You can even use a nap king ring or just fold them nicely Good Luck.

I haven’t voted yet. Personally I normally prefer linen. Though it does largely depend on what your food is for your wedding. For example if you’re having finger greasy/meaty food and so are heavily relying on the paper napkins they can just fall apart and you then end up in more of a mess.

@retsud: I think you’re referring to linen-like napkins. I’m thinking about those, but the ones that I want are burgundy and are .40 each. I’ve been keeping those in mind, but I figure if I’m going to use paper, I should just get the 3 ply guest towel size.
Do you think those will look just as good?

i think the linen-like napkins would be better (i voted paper before you updated the poll). you said it was semi-formal, so I would shy away from 3-ply paper.
i think the linen-like is a good compromise. you can be relatively certain that one napkin will be enough (unlike paper) and it will look decent without costing a bundle.

We did paper – no one even batted an eye – in fact, I got lots of people telling me how cute they are. I think it’s about the napkins you choose and how you dress the rest of the table. It’s definitely cheaper though, I got mine off UK ebay from a woman in Kent. I got 100, plus shipping to Australia – definitely cheaper than hiring linens. Plus, for our wedding, linens just wouldn’t have fit!
