I want to switch to an IUD (I’ve been on the pill for years now) and I was given two options, Mirena or Paraguard (not sure on the spelling)… I’ve been leaning toward the Paraguard since it is hormone-free.
Any bees out there who have used/are using this IUD? Likes/dislikes? Thanks!

I am not using one currently but I am also leaning toward a Paragard. I’m going to talk to my doctor about it next week. I have found a lot of information here: http://community.livejournal.com/iud_divas/
That website has a lot of varying experiences. In my experience, it seems like most websites only have people’s negative experiences on medications and that one is much different.

I had the paraguard for about 2 years and it was great. Very reliable, nothing to do or think about. The only issue (for me) is that I naturally have a very heavy flow and get terrible cramps, so for me, BC without hormones (as in the paraguard) wasn’t for me.

Not sure if you know this, but the Paragard does make periods heavier. It is one of the most common side effects.

I will try and offer my advice since I am a Medical Assistant at an OBGYN practice and my step dad is the Doctor 😀
The paragard is good because it is hormone free and it does last for 10 years, but if you already have very heavy and uncomfortable periods it is going to make them ten times worse!
I personally got the Mirena and I love it. I went from having unbareable 7 day long periods to spotting for one day now. I still some months will get a few headaches (I used to have migraines) and a bit of cramping (it used to be so bad I would be on bedrest for a day). Please dont hesitate to PM me if you have any futher personal questions!

WARNING Too Much Information Begins….NOW!!
I just had a Paraguard inserted on December 20th. The day of insertion, I had some pretty bad cramping as I am nulliparous (haven’t given birth) and my uterus was a little angry with me. Insertion itself was pretty uneventful and only took 20 minutes because I had to fill out paperwork. The week prior to my period I had a couple of cramps that hurt enough for me to go flop on the bed, but each time it was less than 10 minutes. My first period was last week. I had some spotting on Sunday night and actually bled Monday through Friday. One day was a little heavier than normal, but I’ve always had heavy periods and it wasn’t too far from the norm for me. I typically use a menstrual cup, but have decided not to use that until I get past the initial 90-days where I’m most likely to expel. I will be going in for a check-up pretty soon and will have the IUD checked. I have been feeling the strings poke me lately, but I’m not concerned. Hormonal birth control is just not for me. I’m just not a normal person while using it and it just didn’t make sense for me to continue. I haven’t really had any issues with my IUD. LOVE that I don’t have to worry about it and that it’s good for 10 years if I need it to. I’ll get back to you on the dislikes because I don’t have any right now. If you have any questions, shoot me a message.
ETA: I have not been able to actually test the IUD during intimacy since the bf is so far away and it goes without saying that this is a very important part of this subject. Hopefully some other bees will come in and let you know something about that.
