So my dress came in about two months early. I bought it from a store that is over an hour away from where I live. So when it came in last week, I tried it on, and then brought it home. I’m having a salon that is closer to me do the alterations.
But I’m paranoid that something will happen to it! It’s hanging in a closet, in a bag, but I have crazy thoughts! What if there’s a leak? What if the dog learns to open the closet door and chew on it? What If there is a fire?
Is anyone else storing your dress at home? Are you worried something will happen to it?
The one thing I’m NOT worried about is Fiance seeing the dress. He is ADAMANT about not knowing anything about it, so I’m sure he won’t peek 🙂

LOL I think you might be over-thinking this one a bit! Mine hung in the closet six months before my wedding and has been there for a year and a half since, and it’s absolutely fine. As long as you have it in a garment bag this isn’t something you need to take up your brain space worrying about though. If there is a fire, your dress will be the least of your concerns. And I doubt your closet is going to spring a random leak (although my dad inititally wanted to store some of our wedding stuff in their basement…which flooded a week before the wedding! Thank goodness my mom said no and made room for it in the closet instead.)

@Wonderstruck: I know I’m over thinking it 🙂 and I know there is nothing I can do other than what I’m doing 🙂
the dog thing was my FI’s fault. We normally crate the dog when we aren’t here, but are experimenting with leaving him out for short periods of time. As we were leaving for dinner last night, Fiance says “is the closet door closed? wouldn’t it be funny if the one thing the dog decided to tear up was your dress?”
yes, I checked the door was closed. And no, the dog has never destroyed anything in the house. BUT now that thought is in my head!

@Glasgowbound: OMG worst thing ever for him to say, lol! Like yeah…that’d be hilarious, thank you for putting that thought in my head!

Not that worried about it at my house…. I figure if something DID happen, I’d be sad, mourn my dress, and then get out and go looking for a new one.
I am a bit worried about it hanging out at my seamstress’s house though…although she is awesome and very concientous and I know nothing will happen to it…. still worried!!
TBH – I am more worried about what will happen to it ON the actual wedding day. I worry that it will crease up on the car ride over (do I carry a handhold steamer with me to get any wrinkles out??), I worry that someone will get mud or dirt on it, that it will snag, rip or tear on something.

@PeachSnapple: Honestly even if something happens to your dress on the day of, there are things that are going to happene regardless and also more than likely something that is out of your own control. Wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, incident to your wedding dress or anything thing else be damned, enjoy the day! =) You could have a Bridesmaid or Best Man or a family member have a portable steamer with them that can be taken to the ceremony site (if that is where you are getting ready at).

@PeachSnapple: actually, i’ve read a couple of places that a lot of brides rent a little handheld steamer thing for the day-of. my dress is lace, so i doubt i’ll need it, but i know it’s done!
the only thing i’m really worried about it that if it sits in the bag for a long time, itll get all mushed, the crenolin will lose its shape/get mushed and shaped weird, or the trumpet part will get mushed or shaped weird…or that the hanger straps will stress the sides of the dress and make it look ‘pulled’…i’m a weirdo.

@TwoStatesBride: I actually have a portable steamer lol… or my brother does, I gave it to him when he went to Japan a few years ago. Now I just need to see if it made it back to the US…
In regards to the dress getting mushed or loose it shape — I think most seamstresses recommend getting your dress professionally pressed/steamed to get all the wrinkles out…like the day or two before your wedding. that way any “mushing” from it being in the bag will come out and it will be perfect.
@lovelylight99: I have this perpetual fear that someone will step on my dress and get muddy/dirty footprints on the train… Or that my cousin’s kids (flower girls) will get chocolate/mud handprints on the dress… all before I actually walk DOWN the aisle and before all the photos! I’m actually worried about the kids the most… if they are running around the house before the wedding it would be SO EASY for them to accidently ruin the dress and then I would be so so so screwed.
So maybe I do have unfounded fears too. LOL.
