Our nieces first birthday is coming up next month and we’d like to get her a nice gift. We were thinking about doing a starter swing set with a separate infant/toddler seat since the normal set just comes with the basic swings. The product itself is listed for 3 years and up but that seems a bit old for what we’re looking at. Obviously she wouldn’t be able to use it by herself at this stage but I think it’s something that she could grow into a bit. And it’s on sale which makes it that much more appealing.
Since I know nothing about children that age and their capabilities, what do you think of this swingset?
With this seat (says it’s for 9-24 mos):
At around 12-14 months, would you let your child use this or would it be a huge waste of money for us at this stage in the game?

it would have loved it for my little guy. As long as the parents have room for it, do it!

They have plenty of room for it. My only concern was the age but I figure with the right seat, she’d at least be able to use the swing until she can use the slide on her own. Most of the reviews were mentioning 16-18 mo. old kids using it which made me think that the recommended 3+ years thing was kind of excessive.
Thanks for the feedback!

I would say do it, she can grow into it!

My goodness – can you be my aunt?! That looks like an awesome gift! I think it will be fine with the modification you’re making.

My son has the baby swing seat that you would add to it, and he loves it! He’s 9 months old right now, so I’m sure a 1 y/o would love it!

I would push a 1 yr old in the swing- they love it.
It is a very expensive gift though. Does your famly always spend so much on each other?
We tend to spend $20-$50 on each other.

I should say that I’m not yet a parent but have spent a lot of time looking after young ‘uns.

Personally, I think it’s great, but I would run it by the parents first. My parents wanted to buy us a swing set for Addie’s 2nd birthday, but we have to deal with things like snow loads and other random things, so we asked them to hold off until we could research it and find one that fit our specifications. It would just suck to spend money on something like this if it wasn’t what they really wanted, you know?

I think that is a great gift. My 1 1/2 year old is all about about slides and swings! She goes on the big ones at the park but of course I have to be really close by. Occasionally if there are not any big kids around at the park I will let her go down the big slides but I go up with her and make sure she sits down ok and her dad will catch her at the bottom. By next summer your niece will be able to fully enjoy it.
Another great gift is the Pottery Barn chair. They have 3 sizes, get the biggest size so it can be used for the most time. My daughter has the big one with the pink cover with white polka dots and her name monogrammed on it. She loves it! If your niece doesn’t have it yet you can maybe get it as a xmas gift.

Check with the parents first.

I’d adore you forever if you showed up with this gift! My sister and I got scaled-down versions of playsets for eachother’s kiddos (around the 1st/ 2nd bday); adding the appropriate swing makes it all the better.

I come from a very “gift-centric” family so it’s not really unheard of for close family members to purchase elaborate gifts for eachother. DH’s side… not so much (this is his brothers daughter) but we’re her only aunt and uncle on her fathers side so we’d like to get her something special for her first birthday. Every year certainly won’t be like this though.
Good call. I think I’ll run it by my IL’s first and see what they think. If they like the idea, then I’ll talk to my Brother-In-Law about it.
Good to know. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into that for Christmas. 🙂
I just searched other sites to see how much it is elsewhere on the web and Toys ‘R Us is by far the cheapest. Some of the other sites are charging almost $500 for it but TRU has it for $320. If we’re going to get it, we should probably act fast.

Personally I think it is an awesome gift however a bit much. I think that the parents should be purchasing something that big. You could always get her a sensory table. That is what we got my BIL/SIL for their daughters first b-day. She is now 3 years old and she still uses it!
