Just following up my own post, because I missed the part about him being advised to reformat the card. This makes it even more obvious to me that the guy is lying, and has cooked up this story to cover his tracks.
Let’s list the coincidences
1. He waited 3 weeks to back up.
2. He backed up during a storm.
3. He didn’t back up to a disconnected laptop running off its battery, leaving himself open to power outages.
4. The power outage happened while he was backing up.
5. The power outage damaged the card
6. Of all the advice sites he could have found, he found the one giving crappy advice (to reformat the card). Meaning all data is lost. How convenient.
It is like the guy was *trying* to lose the data. Which makes it much more likely to me that he’s made up this story to cover how he lost the photos due to his own incompetence.

yes, if he delivers some pictures, the bride can pay for those. But, they have to be of good quality- not a bunch of pics he would not have delivered if he had the others…
Nevertheless, the number of hours worked should be irrelevant- unfortunately, in this profession- it is the outcome that counts. That is what you pay for- not the photographers presence at your wedding. Editing time should be shorter in this case…
(note: i did not mention photog had to pay for hair and makeup, that can be found in other replies.)
In any case, the essence of my post is to not dwell on this. The bride had a magnificent day and thats what counts. Its not easy, but looking on the bright side can help.

Wow that sucks.Sounds like he needs to come up with a better practice to keep this from happening again.What a terrible thing to have happen.So sorry!

Partial refund? I see people giving you the advice of asking for a “partial” refund. I’d be asking for the entire payment back… that is so irresponsible of him and it sounds like it was totally his fault. In fact, he should be offering to give you every penny back. Pictures are the memory of the day! I am so sorry that this happened to you. 🙁
