- Wedding: August 2012
I posted on here two weeks ago struggling with this “generic fall party” we were going to host, but happened to be 1 month after our elopement.
For 5 years (the length it took me to get my Master’s), I’ve been saying I’m going to celebrate with a party when this is all over. Well that would make it this summer since I graduated in May, but then my mini kegs were not ready til later, my dad passed away in June, then we eloped in August. Kind of a roller coasting summer.
We ended up calling it a Fall Celebration party – celebration of graduation, a marriage, a new deck and the coming of fall! I decorated the house with a fall theme, it was quite nice. The weather was so lovely that day (reached a high of 79F).
We had about 45 people show up about 1/3 of my guest list (we did just give a week’s notice). My graduate adviser/boss provided 2 mini kegs of homebrew. We provided tons of French dip sandwich filling and rolls. A friend made some BBQ pulled pork in the crockpot, and another friend made two pans of lasagna. I also bought TONS of beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic, plus champagne!) and snacks and some sides. People brought a dish or dessert to share. I think we had a nice mix of food and 4 different desserts as well (the kids wished there was more). Plenty for people to have seconds.
People played ladder golf in the yard, some of us played pool – I taught some kids how to play pool, and others hung out by the fire pit. The patio and deck was a perfect place to hang out and chat. Some little girls wanted to see my wedding gowns (I have 3 hanging the basement since I found several online deals) and we put one woman in one of the gowns for her little girl to see. She tried to convince her mom to wear that gown to the party for the rest of the night. Ha! We did not do the slide show of photos of people’s trips. We also did not bust out any wedding photos as we only have teasers on Facebook at the moment.
Some people did bring gifts. We were not expecting gifts at all so we were very touched! Only one lady dressed up and thought it was a wedding thing as her husband did not communicate the email properly I’m assuming! But she is my friend so it wasn’t awkward.
I’d say it was a huge success! It was our first party we threw together at our house. I’m glad we did it, but man that was a lot of work! No family was there as they all live in different states and I did not invite them.
