Hi Bee’s –
Question for you all. My sister is getting married 6 weeks after our wedding. She’s getting married oversea’s and I’m not sure if my new passport will come in by then. She is about to book the flights and wants to know what name to use.
What do you all think?

@Meant2Bee: Wait until after your sister’s wedding to go through the name change process and book everything in your maiden name.

@Meant2Bee: wait until after. in order to apply for a new passport you need to have already gotten your certified marriage certificate and new SS Card. you won’t have enough time to receive and get both those things, get everything done for and mail in your passport application and wait for it to come back in 6 weeks.

I agree with others, wait until after the wedding. It took me a week to get my license back, then it took a couple weeks for my SS card to come. You need the official marriage license to do both so you won’t have enough time and you don’t want to pay expedited fees.

Why don’t you just wait until after the trip to change your name?

So I can’t start the process of changing my name at all?

@Meant2Bee: I went through the same thing. I went on my honeymoon right after I got married and only had my passport and license in my maiden name. I didn’t start the name change until after I got back. You can start it but don’t file any paperwork just yet.

Just don’t change your passport yet and have her book in your maiden name. I just went to Europe on a maiden name passport, married drivers license. Not once did a single person look at my drivers license either in the US or in Europe. The Passport trumps all. Take a copy of your marriage license as back up but you should be fine.

@Meant2Bee: Definitely wait. It’s not worth the hassle – and what if something happens and you can’t get to your sisters wedding? You can start using his name socially – but I would wait for the legal stuff. Start preparing your paperwork in the meantime and file it when you get back!

I would wait. It took two weeks to receive our marriage certificate and then at least another week to receive my social security card. After that it took a few weeks to get my passport- that would be cutting it to close for comfort for me.

@Meant2Bee: sure you can. you can change your social security card. you’ll get your certified marriage license in the mail a week or two after the wedding, and you take that and all your ID stuff to the SS office and they order you a new card. it will come a week or two after that. so you can do that part. but don’t do the passport or your driver’s license yet.

Wait until after you get back. Technically you could probably do it within 6 weeks, but you would be cutting it close. After you get married, you have to go to city hall to get a copy of your marriage certificate, take that to the social security office and officially get your name changed. Then you have to send in your old passport, with another copy of your marriage certificate. You can expedite that process so it only takes 2 weeks for a $75(I think) fee. You could do it if you really want to, and are willing to pay extra for it!

@Meant2Bee: I would hold off until after you come back.
This was my situation: the county said wait two weeks after my wedding for the marriage license to come in. I waited two weeks and then sent my paperwork to get a certified copy. My license actually got lost in the mail. My husband and I had to go back and get another copy made after we were married. We had to send it to his parents (our witnesses) and then they had to send it to the officiant. I then had to wait another two weeks after that to get my certified marriage certificate. This process took around six weeks. Once I got my certified marriage license, I went to the Social Security office to get my name changed and then I went to the DMV a few days later when I had time so all in all, that process took just under seven weeks. You just never know what can happen. I wouldn’t want to risk it on such a short notice.
Oh, and then of course, adding the time to get your passport as well.

@Meant2Bee: You can. But I’d look into what your state does. My state doesn’t file marriage certificates until the end of that month. So you can’t get it until after the 30/31st (for me) and then you have to go to the Social Security office. That takes another 5-10 business days to wait until you get your social security card. After it arrives you can get a new drivers license/passport. Then you must wait for it to arrive. After that you can change all your banking/credit card/whatever else.
So it’s just a long process. If you’re thinking you can get a new passport with a new name within 6 weeks of your wedding…well I think you’ll end up freaking out that it won’t arrive. Because it probably is cutting it really close. I don’t see why it’s worth the hassle.

Thanks everyone for your advice! I just called my sister and asked her to put my maiden name on the flights! Not worth all the hassle!
