We are taking a cruise in November- and I have totally forgotten that my passport is still in my old name. I have changed everything else into my married name. We are flying to Miami and leave out of Miami- my airplane ticket is in my married name- which is fine because it matches my drivers license- I won’t need my passport because it’s not an international flight. Can I just change my cruise reservation to match my old last name and use my passport when we check in for the cruise?
It scares me to change my passport now- according to the passport website they are running behind- I just don’t want to risk not having it- I’m not a person who leaves things to the last minute- I like to have plenty of time to recieve things. I just know with my luck I’ll be the one passport that ends up getting delayed and then I will be stressed about it.
I also have NO idea where my orginal birth cert is- I know I can take that on the cruise. I guess I could order one and have that just in case.

LVtennisgirl80: That’s 3 months away! That’s plenty of time to get your passport renewed with your new last name! In Canada, we can get our passports done in as little as 24 hours (with paying extra, of course). I know that if you take it to a passport office and pick it up from a passport office then the processing time is significantly cut. Any chance it is the same where you are (sounds like the States?)
If you don’t want to risk it, I’m sure you can bring a copy of your marriage licence for proof if you need it, but you may want to call the cruise line to see what they suggest.

I would pay the expedite fee to get it updated asap

I agree with the pp’s — just get it updated. If you change your passport to your previous name, but your drivers license is in your new name, what will you do at ports?? We have always had to show our dl’s when re-boarding the ship at port… But that wouldn’t match your record in the ship database. Get the passport updated asap!

Get a new passport. Pretty much the worst thing you can do is use different forms of ID with different names on the same trip. Just pay the fee to expedite it to be safe.

LVtennisgirl80: I would get it changed, if you do the expediting and overnight shipping it’s not bad I just had mine done and I got it back in less that two weeks. It’s cost around $230 though FYI

LVtennisgirl80: I think is plenty of time to get a new passport with your married name if you wish. However when I went to get my marriage license I asked about my passport fees to change the name. I was told that there was no need for me to change the passport until it expired, they said I can always book under my maiden name to match the passport, is not illegal, and legaly you are not required to change your name if you don’t want to. However is up to you.

Definitely get a new passport. You have plenty of time and you can expedite if you need to. I applied for a new one in the middle of July and got an email yesterday that mine was shipped. So it took about a month. If you already have one that is not expired you can just fill the paperwork out and mail it in.

LVtennisgirl80: 3 months is TONS of time – even if they’re behind. Don’t worry and don’t change your reservation.
However, if you’re still very nervous about getting it back in time and you don’t want to send the passport off, carry a copy of your marriage certificate. The marriage certificate is the link between the two aliases.

I got married 3 years ago and my passport is still in my maiden name. I had just paid to have it renewed earlier that year. I spoke to someone in the office (I’m in Canada) and they said just to book travel in my maiden name until it was time to renew and change my name on the next one.
I’ve flown multiple times just booking in my maiden name. I brought my birth certificate (with my maiden and new last name) but nobody asked for it. I had no issues.

You have plenty of time. I got my name changed on mine in the middle of summer which is their busiest season, and it only took 4 weeks to get it back.

I would expedite the passport and update it. You will probably be OK with your plan, but what if there is some sort of problem. Last thing you will need is additional stress from your passport not being updated.
Have a fun vacation.

I recently changed my name on my passport and with expedited service it came in about 10 days. Super fast!
Last year I traveled with my maiden name passport since tickets were purchased before I got married. I did have it changed with Social Security and the DMV, so I just brought along my marriage certificate in case there were any issues.
