Many people skip getting a passport when cruising. While it’s true that you can do a closed loop, US departure cruise without it, here’s a great example of what can go wrong when you don’t have a passport.
Re the Carnival Victory – I had some information that some people who were unable to board the port was closed and the ship left have arrived in Barbados and are being looked after. Unfortunatley some who did not have passports were ( and my apologies for the previous incorrect information ) not able to fly and had to return home. I feel awful for them.
No one ever expects to have a hurricane close their cruise port. Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival were forced to leave passengers in port due to the hurricane. Many of them failed to purchase trip insurance, leaving them stranded, and with a huge tab for getting home. Of the 145 passengers left by Royal Caribbean, only 15 had the cruiselines air, and were given hotel vouchers. The rest were left to figure it out, and pay for it, on their own.
You never know what could happen. A passport is only $135.00. Insurance usually runs about $100 per person. This small expenditure could save you thousands.
Off my soapbox now!
