I personally prefer a bit wider thicker band; I love one of my rings which has pave diamonds on all 3-sides. They sparkle too much to be mistaken for metal.

@jovannarhea:  I can’t remember the size of the band and don’t know the size of the side stones but I made sure I told our jeweler that I did not like the look of the pave setting around the diamond. After looking at MANY engagement rings, I felt that the smooth bezel made it look nice and not like crushed metal. To me, the crushed metal made it look cheap. I think our jeweler did a great job when he hid the pave setting. The band shows the meta, around the diamond more than the halo but I can live with it. 🙂

@Pinkeebabee:  I loooove your ring! This looks similar to a Demarco ring that I liked a lot, I love the look of pave on all sides, so glamourous!

@Pinkeebabee:  Ah!  We’re almost ring twins!  My band is identical to yours, with a very similar setting.  I’ve never seen another band that looks like this.  May I just say you have excellent taste ; lol.

I would share a picture, but all I have is my blackberry, which can’t take a picture to save it’s life!

Mine band is very small.. 1.5 mm and I don’t think the side stone looks like crush metal from afar. Here’s mine, I hope it helps with the decision.

That link to the LM article is a great read! Just like big stone, little stones need to be very well cut to really shine. You can start by stipulating that they are VS or above clarity, although this will add a bit to the cost of each stone. Absent an instruction ot the latter, many many settings have SI quality and that contributes to the crushed look. They are included/flawed in a more visible way. The other thing stated by PP is the quality of the setting (aka workmanship). It takes a deft hand to be able to secure such small stone with so little metal. I echo PP who suggested looking at prong setting (or fish tail) or bead setting. These tend to make the stones pop more. IDJ Jewelry does good pave work at a good price and if you ask for “Pricescope quality”, you’ll pay a bit more but get melee stones that are excellent. David Klass, Leon Mege, Steven Kirsch, TheGemstoneProject, JewelsbyGrade, LoveAffairDiamonds  all use well-cut melee.
