Do you pay for your wedding dress in full before your first fitting? Or just when it arrives finally. I paid 50% of my dress when I ordered. Just got notified the dress is now in store, and its time to make the other payment. I do not have a fitting scheduled until March as wedding is in May.
So even if I haven’t seen my dress, tried on the finished product, etc… would it be normal to pay the rest now? Or ask to see dress first even without a fitting before paying to ensure all is good?
I’m on the assumption the money is gonna get paid no matter what, and if something is wrong, they would fix it… so maybe just pay now and deal with the fitting in March.

Different stores have different policies, mine required 100% payment before they would order it.

victoriad :
Same. Mine required full payment before alterations and alterations were to be paid immediately after the first fitting. I hadn’t even tried it back on at this point, but they have free re-fittings after that if anything along the lines of what you asked needed adjusting.

sunshadebride : I had to pay in full before they would even order it.
I should think they’d let you go see it before you pay the final balance. What if it’s damaged or the wrong dress?
Just ask the store 🙂

sunshadebride : I paid in full when ordering, because I bought it at a trunk sale. Normal store policy is 50% down at ordering, then the rest when it arrives.

Definitely take a good look at the dress before you pay in full. Thre have been old threads where the wrong dress was shipped. If you catch any mistakes now you will give yourself more time to get them rectified instead of waiting until March.

stephisaur : I think I may do that just so I feel good that its done. No problem paying in full right now, was moreso concerned with if all is good with dress before I drop the rest of the money.

I paid 50% at ordering, and the balance when I took the altered dress home. There have been too many horror stories of businesses going out of business and stranding girls without dresses (and no money). I don’t have a problem paying 50% when ordering (it likely covers their whole cost anyway), and once I have the dress in my hands they can have the balance of the money

Mine required a 50% Payment to order and the rest due when the dress came in to take it home before alterations. Alterations also asked for full payment up front.
I think that’s about standard.

mishybear : My concern is something being up with the dress before my fitting.. Im sure it is all fine. But I think I am going to call, ask to see dress before putting my other payment in. I don’t think its too unreasonable to ask to see it.. wasn’t going to do a fitting because I’ve been working on losing a little before the 1st fitting. So I’ll see what the store is fine with me doing.

sunshadebride : I don’t think that’s unreasonable. I don’t even think it’s unreasonable to tell them you’ve paid 100.% for it so you’re taking it home, and you’ll bring it back for alterations. Then you have it at home to try on to see how close you’re getting to your goal of it fitting, and in case the place goes out of business, you have your dress.

Inspect the dress and try it on at the store prior to making the final payment or taking it home. If you take it home to try on and anything is not right then it is your problem. If you try it on at the store and anything is not right then it is their responsibility. However, if you ordered the wrong size then it is up to them if they will exchange or reorder it because most brides sign a contract when ordering that states this is the size that they wanted the dress ordered in.

I got to try on my dress when it arrived at the store (8 months before they started alterations) and then made the final payment. My alterations payment was due at the 2nd fitting when I took it home.
