I try to be financially savy, but I also have the philosphy that life is short and you should enjoy it while you can. I certainly don’t want to be one of those couples who never had a honeymoon. I pretty much know what we are going to do, but just thought it’d be fun to see what others think.

Will you be completely paying off the school loans, or is it like just a payment towards your loans?

have you considered a compromise? maybe a less expensive honeymoon and still pay some on your student loans.

@Eva Peron: It would just be aggressive payments over the monthly payment. Not a full out wipeout of the loans.

I would just go to Costa Rica on a bit of a budget. Don’t go crazy, maybe even use a Groupon or Living Social deal or go on a GAP adventure tour.

I’d take the Honeymoon. There will always be something that you can put the money towards instead of a vacation but this is your Honeymoon and it will only happen once. I can’t explain how much I value the time that my new husband and I spent away after our wedding. It was the time of our lives and worth every penny. I know that I would have seriously regretted it if we chose to put the money towards something else and forego our Honeymoon so I wouldn’t be surprised if you do too.

@UpstateCait: ditto this. and we only took a 4 day honeymoon. well it was 4 days at a couples resort in Jamaica, after we had 6 days with family and friends at the wedding resort. aside from the wedding day, those 4 days were hands down the best part of the trip and totally and completely worth it. And also felt very much needed!

I would say go on the honeymoon- as long as you have a set repayment schedule and the trip won’t stop you from making regular payments.

depends on your loan rates.

the honeymoon. you won’t get this time back. costa rica is where i’m honeymooning, too. and i have student loans, too. but not going on a honeymoon would’t put that much of a dent in them anyway. i’d never not go on a honeymoon, the wedding would be cut down and everyone would be having vienna sausages and grape popsicles before i denied myself a lovely honeymoon.

Pay your student loans! I’d rather start a life free of debt than take a trip and have to worry about money later down the road. A honeymoon in the states can be just as wonderful as the DR.

Honeymoon. Sometimes you just have to choose the fun thing.

I voted the honeymoon. After this time frame passes, real life begins setting in and it may become hard to take the same block of time like this off.
