Hey, really need some help!
So at the weekend my fiance & I found a very nice, affordable venue and we decided we wanted to book it today. I called the guy up and he said I had to pay an £800 deposit over the phone. We don’t live in the area where we want to get married, so I asked if we could pay it in person when we were back down that way, but he said no I had to pay it over the next few days, as it is confirmation of our booking.
Is this normal? My fiance thinks it’s a bad idea, because he says there is no guarantee if we do it over the phone (ie. no receipt, so he could just take the money and say he never received it).
Also we haven’t got a contract at this stage or any terms & conditions.
I know that venues want the deposit money up front but I’m just really skeptical about giving out my bank details over the phone when I haven’t seen any terms & conditions and there wont be a receipt for it.
Please help, I said I’d call the guy back tomorrow!!!!

Don’t pay until you get a contract and you read it over carefully! I wouldn’t worry about paying over the phone as long as you use a credit card – avoid paying by giving bank information. You could also mail a check. But you are August 2013 so you have loads of time, don’t let him pressure you into thinking the date willl disappear if it takes you a little longer to get it to him.

@Bonni: I paid part of mine online, only because, they have my cc# because of previous events held there. And ongoing charges, kind of like an account, BUT I told them they were not allowed to have it UNTIL I approved the contract.
I was reading over my contract and (our wedding is at a baseball field so normal rules apply) and it said NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINKS. Which is fine, because they’re catering but MY CUPCAKES!!!! So when I went in, I told them about that, he said he’d fix it. He did, and brought it back out and on we went. I’ve got a payment plan going with them, and each quarter they charge me a bit.

Wow, thanks for the quick response! 🙂
I would be using a debit card as I don’t have a credit card so yeah it’d be bank information which is why I am worried… really don’t know what to do, I mean, why would he ask me to do this if it were dodgy (when I have met him & know he is an employee of this venue, which I know is a reputable one, etc etc), but at the same time giving out bank details over the phone goes against everything I’ve been taught! Especially when there wont be proof of it anywhere! But I have no idea about these things so I really don’t know what to do or say.
Argh, my date is actually Feb 2012 haha, I have no idea why it says Aug 2013! I’ve tried changing it but it wont let me!

I agree with PP that you should not pay until you have a contract in hand and have read it over. That sounds fishy to me to put a deposit down before even having a contract.
Also, they should be okay with you mailing them a check. I wouldn’t let them pressure you into paying over the phone. If you want it to get there faster you can always use something like FedEx or UPS (not sure what the equivalent would be where you are) and over night it. You could also pay a little extra to require a signature upon delivery. That way there’s proof you paid and proof of whoever received the check in case there is any dispute.
