Using Paypal doesn’t cancel out your credit card protections to my knowledge.  You should check with your credit card policies though, because the protection through Paypal only lasts for a few months I believe.

I’m not sure how long you have to dispute credit card charge, or PayPal charges…so whether you paid via a credit card, or through PayPal (with a credit card), I don’t know what legal protections you would have a year from now, if he disappeared then. I think most credit cards have a pretty narrow window in which to dispute charges.

You should definitely sign a formal contract when you pay your deposit. There are several easy to use blank contract forms online if your photographer doesn’t have a standard contract he uses, but I would make sure at a minimum to specify any/all payments made, and dates paid (or to be paid), the exact services he will be rendering, and the liability for canceling by either Party.
