I got an A-line dress.  It’s still snug through the waist but I didn’t look good in those mermaid ones!

I’ve always considered myself pear shaped, though I am the same size on top as on the bottom. Maybe I am more hour glass than I realized? Anyway, I thought for sure I wanted an a-line dress and that was what I originally purchased (after trying on one or two other styles). However, I really wasn’t happy with my original dress. I stumbled upon a trumpet style dressed that I loved and ended up buying it. Very surprisingly I felt more comfortable in a dress that hugged my hips than one that didn’t – crazy since I’m always trying to hide my hips!

@Boston Bee: I think you could DEFINITELY wear a fit and flare! Especially if you have a defined waist! In fact, I personally love the way that silhouette looks on a pear shaped body! If I had to choose, the only shapes I would stay away from are the empire and sheath.  You want something that will show your curves and/or balance them out.  The fit and flare does both! But you can never go wrong with an A-line! That’s what I choose.  I’m not sure if I’m technically a pear since I have very broad shoulders but my hips are definitely wider than my chest or waist! Here’s mine!

@78h2o: That dress is gorgeous!

I’m pear-shaped; my hips are a size 4-6 but my top is a size 2.  My wedding has been postponed, but when I tried on dresses before our first date, I loved slim A styles that were slim to the hips and trumpet styles.  I tried on a bunch of poofy A-line dresses – I DON’T know why, consultants just kept bringing them out!  I didn’t like the way they looked; they slimmed me down too much and I felt like I was 12 years old. I like my hips and I think my shape is rather nice, so I want to show it off a little!  However sheaths – especially sheaths with little detailing – didn’t look good on me at all.  I was a bit TOO hippy, and I looked super-short.

So when I go to try dresses on for date #2 I’m sticking with slim A-lines and trumpets.
