I’ve never been but my best friend and her husband were stationed there for several years and LOVED it. Its a great town for young people who like to party or hang out at the beach all the time.

I’m from Florida (South Florida) but lived in Tallahassee for 5 years during college (North Florida) and if you were going to a beach in N. Florida (near Pensacola) I would highly suggest Destin, Florida over Pensacola or others.  Destin is BEAUTIFUL and fun and plenty of nice places to see.  With that being said, I see you are getting married in December.  Let me just tell you, if you are honeymooning in December-March, it DOES get cold in North Florida (as low as 30’s) and certainly not beach weather.  For your honeymoon this time of year, I’d suggest South Florida but mainly the Keys.  I LOVE Key West and have been several times.  I’d go there in a heart beat.  Being in Key West does not even feel like you are in the U.S. It feels like a caribbean island where you can walk the streets with drinks, watch insanely beautiful sunsets with entertainment all around you, and it’s just a different world down there.

So, I suggest Destin if North Florida or Key West if South Florida/winter time. πŸ™‚

@chickeybarr:  i totally agree with you on the Destin part.  Pensacola has the same beach but its mostly military.  We are going to destin for my bachelorette party and we vacation there 6-7 times per year.

I have been to pensacola one time to pick a gf up at the airport who flew in for girls weekend and it really wasnt anything desirable.

@chickeybarr: Totally agree about the weather!  We used to do our girls trip to Florida right after New Year’s and finally learned to go in April!

We vacation in Clearwater Beach every year.  We went to Pensacola one year for spring break and since it is further north it is colder.  I agree that if the Keys are an option than go there.  Marco Island and Miami are also my Florida faves.

I agree with PP, Destin is the place to be in North Florida. But it does get coooold. Marco Island is my favorite place to go vacationing in Florida. If you want a smaller place that has more of the B&B vibe Sanabelle Island and Anna Maria Island are beautiful too.

Ohh and the PP’s reminded me – my sister and brother in law honeymooned in Sanibel Island at the Marriott Sanibel Harbor Resort & Spa and absolutely loved it.  They loved how relaxing it was- they have beautiful pictures, spent days by the pool, beach, went on a dinner sunset cruise, etc.  The sunsets there are beautiful!  Let me know if you have any questions..I have been to many places in Florida in my young life and love so many of them πŸ™‚

I agree with the previous posters…I prefer Destin over Pensacola in terms of beach quality but it is too cold certain times of year.  I currently live in North Florida and wouldn’t recommend going before May (We went to the Pensacola/Destin area once at the end of April, and the water was too cold to enjoy). There are also some smaller beaches near Destin you may want to check out (Ex. Seacrest Beach, Santa Rosa Beach) that are quieter if you want a more relaxing honeymoon, and possibly more affordable.

Key West Pictures – there are a lot! There’s such a variety of things to do in Key West.  Beach, Walking/Exploring all the history there and then having a “bar” day which is actually really fun since you get to walk around with drinks and sit at outdoor bars, etc., watching cruise ships, parasailing, jetskiing, sunsets, renting scooters, taking tours, etc.  I want to go back πŸ™‚

I have to disagree with all of the previous posters and say I HATE DESTIN! It is so consumerism (read the only real thing to there is shop at stores the average person can’t afoord) and there is no culture in Destin!

Pensacola is one of ( actually the oldest, but not continuous, town in the US) the oldest towns, has tons of museums and cultural centers, as wll as Historic Seville with tons of history and cheap bars. Also, you could go to Adventures Unlimited in Milton.

However, it does get super cold in Pcola/Destin in the winter (we hit 19 last winter).

Here’s the thing–West Coast of Florida is white sand, sunsets, and more laid back.  East coast is sunrises, yellow sand, and more metropolitan.  You get both sunrises and sunsets in the Keys, and the drive down from MIA is GORGEOUS.  So, it really depends on what you’re looking for.  If you like to go dancing, try lots of different cuisines, and be more social, I’d say go to Key West.  If you want long walks on soft sand, lots of seafood, and sunsets every night, go to the West Coast… I’d recommend the St. Pete Beach area.  However, it does get cold in St. Pete too… we were there this December for 4 days and it was in the 40s, with rain 2 days.

Pensacola is a big Navy town, and a pretty big one for North Florida… that means lots of car dealerships in with the historical sites.  Key West is more quiet history that is focused on tourism… does that make sense?

If you’ve got the time and the inclination, you could also do a mix of places.  Fly in to Fort Lauderdale, stay in Delray Beach right on the sand (artsy, more expensive area) for a night or two, then drive down to Key West with a stop in Miami for the day.

Sorry if this was too long or confusing.  People from Florida have lots of opinions about their home state.  πŸ™‚
