I’ve always heard that they were late April-May, but I think it depends on that particular year.

While it depends on the climate and variety, peonies typically have a VERY short growing season, typically about seven weeks spanning mid-May and June.

Yeah. Peonies are ridiculously expensive, in part due to their super short growing season. There are several flowers which look similar and are less expensive (ranunculus, and a certain type of rose that is escaping my memory at the moment). Try pricing on of those!

You can order them on fiftyflowers.com for delivery near your date. They’re expensive, but not insanely so. I think your florist is exaggerating.

@SeaIsland:  Well, you could call their bluff by offering to order/pay for them yourself. I’d like to hear their justification for insisting you pay their inflated cost vs. buying them yourself. But it’s a resort and you’re a captive audience, so they can get away with a lot.

In Michigan, peonies bloom in late May or early June and have a very short season.  My florist recommended large garden roses instead (I forget the name of the variety) that have similar looks but won’t be nealy as expensive as getting peonies off-season.  Perhaps that’s something your florist could do as well?

@sarahblais:  +1

I opted out of peonies bc of price and season. I used garden roses and cabbage roses (which I now LOVE!!!)
