I have so many waitressing horror stories, I could write a book. (Hmmm, maybe I should? Not a bad idea……but I digress)

Sometimes people are just plain old mean and nasty, rude at every turn, and just want to be douche bags. Nothing is ever good enough for people like that.

You just have to kill ’em with kindness, picture their face on a dartboard, and move on.

I work at the police station, and when people call our non-emergency line waiting to make a complaint, my direct line is one of the alternate options if you’re just looking for “crime prevention information” and is the “press 1”, so people do it a lot.  I get yelled at fairly frequently when someone’s car is stolen or something, and I patch them back through to the complaint takers.  The best one ever though, was when I was away from my desk, and someone selected my direct line, and left me a LOOOOONG message about how ridiculous it is that no one is answering this phone, and how dare we only be open Mon-Fri 9-5, and WHAT IF THIS WAS AN EMERGENCY?!?!?  They were going to complain directly to the chief of police that we don’t have a phone number that’s available 24/7 for emergency complaints.

I’m like… wow, you haven’t heard of 9-1-1??

for some people its a power trip and they feel you are beneath them as you are performing a service, especially if they feel your duties are considered not that difficult to do – i mean how many times have you seen someone go nuts at a check out chick or counter staff only because they deemed their job not difficult (although i couldnt do their job!)

when i was in payroll i once had a guy tell me i was nothing better than a common whore because i work for money – yes i do and at $80K per year im happy for you to call me that just before security shows you out the door and he never worked for that company ever again

i took a call a few weeks ago from a man who was going crazy at our customer service team – they had him on loud speaker because he was just. that. insane.    i had him calm by the end of the call and he even apologized – i reckon he was off his meds that day, he was crazy

my thoughts are talk to your manger, ask if he/she feels you anything was justified and if something could be done differently – or he might just shrug it off as annoying customer syndrome and give you his total support.  try not to worry about it too much, people having shitty days often take it out on those that dont deserve it

How do you handle these people? You just ignore it and brush it off.  You can blow up at them but it will get you nowhere.  Some people actually come in ready for a fight for no reason at all. After a while of dealing with it and getting your feelings hurt you just learn to brush it off and ignore it.

I remember working at a bank. In order to cash a check you need a driver’s liscence, I can’t tell you how many times I got cursed at because I simply asked to see their driver’s liscence.

There is no reason to change the way you answer the phone, you weren’t doing anything wrong.  People are going to complain whether you deserve it or not.  A good Supervisor will know when to take it seriously or not.  If anything happens you just make sure to tell them exactly what happened and it will all be disregarded.

I work in fast food and people throw their money down on the counter even when I hold my hand out. They also talk to me like I am stupid because since I work at Subway, I must be stupid right? I must have messed up somewhere in life and now have to work this horrible sandwich-making job to feed my eight kids right? Wrong. I have a college degree and a good work ethic, so I work my butt off in fast food because the economy bombed and I don’t have much else of a choice.

Life is what you make of it, some people just don’t like living I guess.

@eloping: Wow, by his logic, then everyone who gets a paycheck is a common whore. Dumbass.

@Mrs.ChubbyBunny: I don’t know if you experience this at Subway, but my personal favorite is when the customer orders wrong then blames you!

I used to work at a coffee shiop and people would order a cappucino (we served real cappucinos – foamed milk and esspresso), and would freak out because it didn’t taste like the “Cap[ucinos” from Timmy Ho’s or a gas station. Its not my fault you people are idiots and don’t know how to order!

@nutMeg13: LOL thank you. Everything we serve is on the GIGANTIC plastic, shiny, menu behind me. It is not my fault that your second grade reading level did not prepare you for this difficult task. Go home. Forget about eating. Pick up book. Educate. Immediately lol.

I spend basically my whole day on the phone, sales and customer service. Some people are just amazing the way they “crreate” a problem where none exists. There is one lady who complains constantly about how the boxes we ship things in are too big. First of all the boxes are not too big, we’ve tested this stuff and that is how big they need to be to ship safely. Secondly why would you call a company up every month for 24+ months to complain (visciously) about the packaging? At one point she even took pictures of the empty boxes and demanded we provide an email address so she could send us the pics. Lady, we already know what our empty shipping boxes look like.

Sigh.

I need a raise.

I don’t work with the public (for a reason) but sometimes I still have to deal with irate customers and I’ve got to say, some people are just f’ing ridiculous.

I’m an auditor for a retail chain. I handle all of the sales processed in our stores. I am NOT customer service but sometimes our store personelle will give customers my extension when they have an issue instead of directing it to customer service…

A few years ago I got a call from a very angry woman claiming that we were holding her money and that she needed it to feed her kids. She had shopped in our store earlier that day and attempted to buy some CD’s but her card was declined. She had under $10 available but was trying to make a purchase of $30+. After the card was declined the bank put a hold on it so the $8.62 or whatever it was wasn’t available to her at that time. She. Was. FUMING! She called and screamed obsceneties at me for like 5 minutes. She insulted my job, referring to me as a “minimum wage loser” (um… I’m an auditor), and tried to guilt me by saying that because of us, her children wouldn’t be able to eat. Little did this chick know, she was messing with the wrong bitch. I said earlier that I don’t work with the public for a reason and thats because I have ZERO tolerance for stupidity.

How someone in her financial situation can belittle ANYONE ELSE is beyond me. I’m sure it was just because of her own insecurities but frankly, I don’t give a shit. I expect a certain amount of respect in order to give respect back. I’m not going to sit there and be talked down to because this chick is a bad mother who would rather buy some CD’s than feed her children with her last $8.62. Again, NO tolerance for stupidity.

Thankfully my boss at the time hated ridiculous customers even more than I did so he had me transfer her to him and he let her have it. It ended with her threatening to file a complaint with the BBB and my boss laughing at her and telling her to go for it. Bet we lost that customer. Bummer.

@Magdalena: those are people with way too much free time on their hands!

we had a “no question” refund policy and this one person would buy our product, use it and then complain about it, get a refund and then buy it again, use it, complain, get a refund blah blah blah.  yeah, after the 3rd time i told the marketing team to get rid of that clause and we told her no more and/or please do not buy our products anymore

I used to work at a Barnes & Noble at the cash wrap and I got yelled at CONSTANTLY because I had to refuse returns that were over the 2 week deadline from time of purchase. It says right on the back of the receipt in big red letters. I guess people who shop at B&N can’t read.

The worst was a very angry man who was trying to return magazines (defintely a no-can-do) that were a couple months old…yeah. He was giving another co-worker of mine hell something fierce. It escaladed into him yelling at her. I said to him “sir, please stop yelling at my co-worker. I’m calling the manager to help you”. He flew off the handle and called me a racist. WTF??!!!!

He was the ONLY instance that got me so shaken up that I had to chill out in the breakroom. Every other customer I’ve been able to brush off, but he was the worst.
