I never expected this, looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Friends keep making comments that they want a ring like mine but larger, etc. and mentioning how it shouldn’t be a problem because they want to spend under $10k, etc etc.
My ring was almost $20k (I accidentally saw the receipt!), but all these comments have me thinking that my ring looks cheap! Is that just inexperience with the cost of e-rings? I know I shouldn’t care, I love my ring and that’s all that should matter. But this is the fourth comment!! What’s the deal?

I think people that haven’t ring shopped are pretty bad a guessing how much a ring cost.
Can we see a pic?

mod214: Firstly, are these friends?? Those comments are INCREDIBLY rude. I know it probably hurts, but try to ignore them. You’re right – it only matters that you and your Fiance love the ring! And even more important than that, is what the ring symbolizes — a lifetime with your partner 🙂

Lol I’m so embarrassed to even be bothered by this. It’s just so strange! Maybe it’s because it’s a “medium sized” solitaire?
For the most part they are friends, some are guy friends who are thinking of proposing to their girlfriends. One comment was from a total stranger!

WHAT? I very much doubt that your ring looks cheap. It might have a slightly smaller carat weight and very good clarity and colour, which may explain the disparity in price and appearance. Can you describe what it looks like or show us a picture? One thing to keep in mind is people often don’t know how much diamonds really cost until they actually think about purchasing them. Before I got engaged I thought I could get a 1 carat diamond for $1500.

I don’t think people realize how expensive a diamond ring can cost. I’m sure your friend could get a big diamond for $10 grand, but it might not be a good quality diamond. I would just ignore the comments and try not to let them get you down.

That’s exactly the situation, my Fiance wanted to get a good quality diamond even if it’s not huge (it’s 1.55). To be fair, I also had no idea what rings cost. I was a little taken aback when I saw the receipt!

Oh, I see the picture now. I think because it is cushion cut it faces up smaller that a brilliant round and people probably think it is worth a bit less. Don’t worry, anyone who knows something about diamonds knows it is NOT cheap. Its a gorgeous ring. Let them say what they want now and lets see what they are saying when they actually have rings on their fingers. p.s a 1.5 diamond is VERY large in most circles.

A twenty thousand dollar ring? Oh, honey – if you guys have that much money to throw around you don’t need to waste time worrying if someone understands what a 20K diamond should look like.
Sorry you feel like others think you have a cheap looking ring. Screw ’em.

What your friends are saying aren’t the nicest things to say. You probably know if they might be really materialistic or just uninformed about variations in diamond quality or ring prices in general. I think your ring is nice though.

Your ring is beautiful. I’m sure once your friend actually starts looking she’ll realize what she said was wrong

I’m sure people think my solitaire is cheaper than it was because it’s a 0.8 carat solitaire but it’s amazing quality and platinum. I love it and can see the fire in the diamond, and didn’t have a choice because Fiance picked it. Who cares about rings anyway? I see so many people on here trying to justify their choice of a more / less expensive ring. it doesn’t matter…. It’s personal preference! Let’s just be happy we have fingers to put them on and beautiful partners! 🙂

gingerminty: So true, I recognize that it is a totally ridiculous thing to even think about. I was more just surprised last night when it kept coming up. Also live in NYC, land of the free home of the enormous engagement ring, so I guess that’s the perspective the commenters are coming from.

You ring is gorgeous and certainly does not look cheap! I think people just tend to think they know all about stuff that they haven’t a clue about. They’ll find out right quick when they finally go ring shopping!

mod214: The people making these comments are totally ignorant when it comes to diamonds and rings. Let them find out when they go to get their rings. Especially if some of the comments are from guys. Diamonds are something that guys don’t learn about until they feel the need to buy one. Your ring is gorgeous and it’s a very large size with nice quality (obviously considering the price). Congrats!
