Congrats on your pregnancy!

pp is right though; you are probably not as far along as your last menstrual period date would indicate. You’ll probably have a dating scan where they will give you a more accurate gestation. LMP is only accurate for women with a regular 28 day cycle who ovulate on day 14, which is not the case for many women.  That’s why most women get a dating scan in the first trimester. If you knew when you ovulated, that would be more accurate for dating the pregnancy than LMP.  bliblob :

bliblob :  I know how they normally date a pregnancy, I’ve been pregnant before but if you O late, the dating scan is what they’ll use to determine how far along you are and when you’re due. GL and keep us posted!

bliblob :  congrats! Yes, it’s calculated from date of LMP but that’s only a rule of thumb, it’s not how each individual pregnancy is calculated for estimated due date. I ovulate late in my cycle, and knew when I ovulated through temping. When I was pregnant with my son, my LMP was 8/09 but I knew I ovulated 8/29 so that’s the date my doctor uaed to calculate the EDD. I would have been almost a week off if I had used LMP. It is later confirmed by first u/s.

I just wanted to add, the reason why we’re explaining this to you is that it can cause a lot of stress if you go in for your dating scan thinking you’re further along than you really are. For example, if you go in for your dating scan at 8 weeks according to LMP, but ovulated a couple weeks “late,” then your embryo is going to measure a lot smaller than 8 weeks. That could cause unnecessary alarm.

Think about it this way: the embryo does not exist until conception, which occurs within 24 hrs of ovulation. So say you and another woman have the same LMP date, but you ovulated two weeks after she did. That means her embryo is two weeks older than yours even though you had the same LMP.
