@echomomm:  This girl I used to work with used straws (actual  plastic  straws)to curl her hair and her natural hair was very straight. This tutorial video shows what her hair would look like after and it seemed to  last a couple  days.  She would do it before bed and leave it on overnight. I have yet to try it…my hair is so long and thick!

For anyone on this thread saying their hair is part wavy part straight, or in between wavy and straight – please check out the curly girl method! I would bet money most of you are actually curly haired but don’t know it. If your hair frizzes and poofs instead of staying pub straight (with no heat) you probably have wavy or curly hair.

I agree that they change your hair permanently. But, I read that it only causes permanent changes to the hair follicle if the chemicals were too strong or left on for too long. I had super straight hair and got a perm as a teenager and my hair has never been the same since then. It is wavy and frizzy now if I don’t blow dry it. Before I had a perm, my hair was so straight that it didn’t even need to be blow dried. So, I would be really careful of who you trust to do the perm if you decide to do it.

I have really straight hair and have always been obessesed with curly hair. I would beg my mom to do my hair up in sponge rollers every single night in grade school! I tried getting a perm as a kid but my hair wouldn’t take. Then when I turned 18 I tried again and I loved it. My hair was down to my butt back then so it took the salon more than one bottle of perming solution and a while to set everything but it looked great and lasted over a year and a half. After that my hair stayed wavy for a couple years as it grew out. I never have had an issue with my hair growing in looking weird with the curly/wavy hair from the perm. It blended nicely.

The last two perms I had were also fine. I’ve actually been considering getting another one recently because I really miss the body and volume they gave me. It’s important to note that I brought LOTS of photos each time I got perms and always expressed that I wanted loose curls or something more akin to a body wave. NOT a tight 80s looking spiral perm! You can look up different rod sizes and what their results look like to give you more ideas. There’s also different types of perms that can give various looks. Definitely find a hair stylist you trust and who has experience with perms.

It’s odd, this idea that perming can change the hair that hasn’t grown yet. It can’t, but it’s worth Googling because there are some interesting facts around changing/ not recognising ones own hair type .

lt kind of reminds me of the notion that once a pedigree dog ( only the bitch, surprise surprise) had been mated with a non pedigree, it was ruined for any future pups , no matter how pedigreed the next father.

@elderberry:  If the chemicals damage the hair follicle, it can change your hair permanently. It might not happen to everybody, but it can happen. My hair was so straight that it couldn’t hold a curl no matter how much hairspray I used. The curl would be gone in 10 minutes. My hair has never been the same since I got a perm when I was 13 years old and I am now 33. It’s more of a situation of a “perm gone wrong”. Lol. I think she may have kept the solution on for too long or she may have used a solution that was too strong for me. All I know is that I’ve had wavy hair ever since and that was 20 years ago. I have researched about it and that’s the answers that I have found about the permanent damage it can do.
