Anyone occasionally decide that you need a day off from your daily life (job/school) just to destress and prevent getting sick? I decided to do this today. I cancelled the classes that I teach today, and I’m going to email my professor for my grad class tonight and let her know I won’t be there. I’m telling everyone I’m not feeling well, which isn’t totally a lie (I have a nasty cold), but I’m mostly taking today off because I know if I keep going full steam much longer I will be sick.
Anyone else do this sometimes? Anyone else staying home from school or work today?

I always want to do this…but I always end up feeling too guilty to take a day if I don’t really have anything else scheduled/if i’m not actually sick. I DO want to take a day in March though, just because that’s a long stretch where I don’t have any days off, and planning a day off makes it seem less dreary to go to work every day!

I do it all the time. We get a lot of sick days and vacation days (I’m taking 3 weeks off for the wedding and will STILL have 2 weeks of vacation left over this year, not to mention more than a month’s worth of sick time) and there’s too many people around here who have let their days stack up so much that they’re losing them now. I will NOT be one of those people!

Yup. I do this about every couple of months actually. I say I am ill but just take a few days off for myself and my mental well being! Life is too short and you have to take care of you.

Yep, today. In my defense, I did have some pretty crappy cramps last night which kept me up but I probably could have went to work today.

I don’t now that I have a real job (sort of a real job, anyway, lol), but I did it all the time back when I was in college. Especially for this one internship I had that never had anything for me to do. 😛
I definitely think they’re a good way to keep yourself balanced. If I had sick days or anything, I would definitely take one every now and then.

Yes I have definitely done this before! I have done it just because I need a day of doing absolutely nothing at home by myself. I think mental health days should be built in and that you shouldnt have to fake sick. My first company was a Mental Health non-profit so we could call in for a mental health day (even though we were using sick time) but nowadays I have to fake physical sick in order to take one and that sucks!

I’m thinking I will stay home when I leave in 20 mins for lunch. I was feeling nauseous this morning and threw up, which made me temporarily feel a little better, but I still have a nasty headache and nausea. I don’t have anything left to do today at work so I wouldn’t feel too guilty about leaving.
I took one personal/”sick” day since I started and it was definitely deserved and necessary–but I work in a position where my being there is rarely necessary.

Glad to know I’m not the only one! I do feel somewhat guilty about it, but I feel like I shouldn’t have to – if you know a day off will keep you healthier, happier, and better able to handle your responsibilities in the long run, it makes sense! A big contributing factor for me today was that I slept horribly last night – I knew if I didn’t cancel classes and sleep in, I would be worthless for the whole day.
And a plus, now I got to watch an hour of Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta

I haven’t done this since I started at my current job (last July) but I’m almost positive that I will one day this week… I did it a lot at my old job.
I think the reason I haven’t here yet is because I actually feel like I have my own jobs to do that no one else will do if I’m not here. I’m trying to get caught up this week so I can call in sick Thursday because I”m mentally exhausted and I need a day.

Sometimes mental health days are just necessary for your real health and sanity. Don’t feel bad for taking one!

Never. I felt guilty for not going to work on day when I was so sick I couldnt even stand up. I slept for the majority of the day but whenever I would wake up I would call the store or pull out my laptop to try and do some work from home. Pretty sure I am a workoholic.

Yes, I’ve done that before. I call them “mental health days”.
