Ama14:  Beware if the cranberries are heavily sweetened. Sugar often feeds infection.

ClaudiaKishi:  I second this.

Have you had a UTI before?  If so, a nurse may even be able to diagnose you over the phone and call in meds without you being seen.

If not, I would call your clinic back and say the pain is unbearable and ask if you can come leave a urine sample instead of waiting for your office visit tomorrow.

Ama14:  I agree with PPs about the Azo. I had a very painful UTI recently and had to wait until the morning to see the doctor. Azo really helped with the pain and constant “I have to pee” feeling. From what I understand from my doctor regarding cranberry juice is that it’s effect is really minimal unless you drink gallons of it. Drinking any fluid, however, will help, so make sure you are drinking something. I would avoid heavily sweetened cranberry juice cocktails, but I find pure cranberry juice to be too tart to drink. They do make concentrated cranberry liquid or pills that you could try, but I think this is more of a preventative than a treatment. My mother also swears by D-mannose suppliments for preventing and treating UTIs.

I also agree about the AZO! Get some of that and drink loads and loads of water. Getting rest is helpful too. So sorry you are going through this! Sending you wishes for a quick recovery!! xo

Ama14:  Get the cranberry pills, AZO. They are life savers.

I can’t second the azo cranberry pills enough, they help so much with the uncomfortableness of the issue until you can get into see a dr. They’re cheap and they really work! They have the strange side effect of turning your pee bright red/pink but it’s a small price to pay IMO.

Make sure you’re drinking cranberry juice no sugar added and not cranberry cocktail!!!! Definitely makes a difference.

If you’re in that much pain go to emerg.  Heat is really bad for UTIs as well (i’ve been told).  In my experience, extreme pain all the time is a sign of it spreading to the kidneys.  You really don’t want to mess with a UTI, I’d go to emerg.

Ama14:  I would call and insist that you be seen or go to the emergency room. UTIs can spead to your kidneys quickly and then you’ll most likely be hospitalized. I would just go to the ER, personally.

I don’t find AZO to help at all. And my doctor told me you’d have to drink a TON of cranberry juice to make a difference so I don’t bother anymore. Just lots of water.

weatherbug:  +1. Especially if you start to run a fever.

The pharmacies sell pain killers for this. Azo, cystex (my fav), Or uristat. Get them now. They make a huugggee difference.

cranberries are USELESS, its an urban legend. All of the research shows they are useless once the infection starts, so your just torturing yourself by eating them. And like others said, monitor yourself for a fever. If one starts, get to the ER asp.
