Hi All Perth Brides 🙂
I’m just wondering where you got your cakes from? I’ve already selected a cake vendor and have paid her a $300 deposit.
However, when I paid the deposit etc I wasn’t really well and just paid without paying too much attention to the invoice or anything.
When I got home I discovered it was higher than I thought…I always take notes when I am on the phone, so I found the bit of paper from when we had our initial discussion about cost, and that paper said that my cost would be $750 for a 3 tier, if she made all layers or $550 if my Mother-In-Law made and she decorated and delivered etc.
I’ve changed my cake slightly so it is now a 4 tier (the 4th tier being quite small) My top tier is being made by my Mother-In-Law, the next tier down is a dummy tier and the 3rd tier my Mother-In-Law is making and the bottom tier my cake maker is making.
The cost is $950……..I’m not sure how we came to that figure? Given now she is making only 1 tier (her original quote was $750 if she made all 3). Surely 1 extra tier to ice isn’t going to cost that much different?
I’ve tried emailing her and calling her. I’m not angry or anything (well, I wasn’t) I am sure there’s a good explanation – I just want to hear it, I hate the feeling like I am being ripped off.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO??
I don’t know if I can get my $300 back that I gave to her as I paid it in cash & only receipt i have is the copy of my order form which she wrote on…
My first email asking her to explain was over 2 weeks ago now.
** I KNOW I POSTED IN “AUSTRALIA” BUT WOULD LOVE ANY ADVICE!! THANKS!!

Is she a home baker or does she have a shop?
If you can’t get a hold of her by phone/email I would probably drop a letter to her business address or make an appointment to go around and see her? Have you tried calling from a different number? I only say that in case she is dodging your calls!
It certainly seems a bit odd especially since it definately isn’t wedding season so she shouldn’t be so flat out with work that she couldn’t respond to an email.

Yes, it’s very strange and it’s starting to stress me out!! If you have a business you should be checking your emails and replying back to clients – she hasn’t done that in about 3 weeks, and I think that it is just poor form.
I think she bakes from home, I’m not really sure, I just stumbled across her website, liked her designs and sent her a picture of what I wanted and asked if she thought she could replicate it.
I would say she is ignoring me – I can’t imagine any other excuse! Maybe I should get my Fiance to ring up!!
Thanks for the group information – I’ll join!! 🙂

So today, after a month. I got a response. I had emailed a week ago (3 months prior to my wedding date) to say that I wasn’t happy with her lack of communication with me, and I wanted my deposit back and I wouldn’t be using her.
She told me she would not be returning my deposit ($300!!!) as she had to turn other business away to make my cake.
I don’t believe she turned other business away, because September in Australia isn’t peak wedding season, she’s not a store – she works from home. She was only making 1 tier of my cake and icing 4 (FMIL was making the other 3).
I believe 3 months is ample time to cancel, I haven’t signed anything to say that I am bound and that deposits aren’t refundable. I’m SOOOOO ANGRY. I also paid $100 extra than the $200 she asked for, because that was the cash I had on me and thought it would ease the amount I had to deposite later.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do? I’m so disappointed that people run their businesses like this, especially in this industry.
