I am making wedding invitations for my friend and she really wants to use these petal folds as her envelopes (https://www.cardsandpockets.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2994). There will be no inserts, so nothing would fall out. We would use a sticker to hold all the petals closed and write the address directly on the petal envelope. This isn’t a money issue, it’s just what she thinks she would like, but I am a little worried about how they will hold up in the mail. Do you think the petals would tear open? Do you know of anyone who has successfully done this or is it just crazy?

I’d be a bit worried about this… It might depend, though, on how stiff the cardstock of the petal folds is. If it’s thicker, I feel like it might be more “springy” and more likely to unstick the seal and pop open. It’s quite thin, on the other hand, you might be able to get a better fold… even so, though, I’d worry about them going through the sorting maching. Petal folds are really lovely – could you get some kind of simple envelope to put them in?

can you do a wax seal?? that would look cool and it would stay shut for sure.

I would be pretty concerned that they wouldn’t be very pretty by the time they got there. Plus, the PO puts all those crazy barcodes and stuff all over mail…even if you ask to hand cancel it sometimes. And then that stuff would be cluttering the invite itself.
Petal folds are super cute, but I would probably opt for a little envelope to slide it into.

I did petal fold envelopes – but they were my inner envelope. I used stickers and I will say, I would worry greatly about them popping open. The suggestion of wax seals is great – because then they would stay shut.
