Have her look at bridesmaid dresses! She can definitely get them ordered in her size and some places will even do petite dresses. I’d also look around at retailers that sell bridesmaids dresses, such as JCrew and Ann Taylor.

My Future Mother-In-Law had a nightmare of a time finding a dress for her petite frame. She’s right around 5′ and disproportionately busty. We tried the local bridal shops and struck out. We tried Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale’s… phew! She found Adrianna Papell and Kay Unger fit the best. I think you can find them at Macy’s type dept stores. The styles that worked for her were short, cocktail style gowns with a v-neck.

As for a dress color that complements your colors, would you be open to a color on either side of purple (like a cool-toned blue)? I like silver for her – it’s an easy choice. What’s her coloring like?

She could pull off a cool blue easily. What do you think of a royal blue (not too saturated)? It’s close enough to purple. Or a print! Are you open to her wearing a print?

Spring and summer will be the best time to find her dress. My mom snagged hers at the end of the summer before all the dark colors and heavy fabrics came out. Even a month ago, the stores hadn’t released “resort wear” and most of it was prom — probably not what your mom had in mind.
