My first kitty was Lucy. When I was around 4 or 5 she started hanging out outside of our dining room window. When my parents weren’t looking I would toss her pieces of bologna to eat. Naturally she started coming back everyday and I’d keep feeding her. Eventually my parents caught on and went out to investigate. Lucy was still out there, snacking away on her bologna when my parents found her. She had burns all over her body, a broken leg and half of her whispers burnt off. We assumed that her owners were abusing her but since she didn’t have any tags or anything, we really didn’t know. My parents took her to the vet, paid a hefty bill and we had a new family member. I remember being so angry and disgusted that anyone would deliberately hurt an innocent animal.

Lucy went through a lot with me. I’m an only child so I kinda considered her my sister. I would dress her up in my doll clothes (until my mom found out and told me stop) and we’d play barbies together. Given, it would really just be me playing but I did fashion a pretty bitchin’ saddle for her so my barbies could ride her around, lol. She was there during my parents messy separation and our move up north. She was a really good cat.

When I was 13, Lucy was diagnosed with a stomach tumor (I don’t remember if it was ever cancer or not). Because of the tumor, she couldn’t control her bowels and would poop everywhere. She was a completely different cat and both my mom and I knew that she was in a lot of pain. One day I got home from school and Lucy wasn’t there. Turns out my mom had her put down earlier that day. I remember being so angry that I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. Looking back, it was probably better that my mom did it without telling me since I know I would have been a complete wreck. I cried for days but it eventually sunk in that she wasn’t in pain anymore so I started to get over it. We gave her a good life for the 8 or so years that we had her. It’s just too bad that some pathetic excuse for a human being had her before we did.

@zippylef: My dream, now a reality. Some day I will add a Corgi to the mix….some day.

You all rock!

Mrs. Bee just posted about the passing of her beloved cat who has battled a tumor for the past 3+ years.  It made me cry – she is such an awesome mommy!!

Here’s our sweet girl:

We adopted her from Philly’s Animal Control shelter.  She had an owner but the owner gave her up, citing “too much responsibility.”  We don’t know too much else about her, but we wonder every day how someone could have given up this sweet animal.  We had fallen in love with another dog, but weren’t able to take him home for about a week due to some personal obligations.  They wouldn’t let us “hold” him, but we called every day to show our serious interest in the dog and it turned out that on the day before we were going to adopt him, someone else did first.  We were happy he found a home, but so sad at the same time that it wasn’t with us.  We went back to the shelter anyway to see if we could find another dog we connected with, and that day, Hope came home with us!

We don’t know much more about her background but all that matters now is her life with her new family!  She’s a lot of work and a flurry of pup energy (she’s only around 1 yr old), but we’re putting in the time with her and definitely seeing the results.  We love her!!

I love all the stories in this thread and the cute pictures. Animals are the best! Also, major props to folks who adopt pits or pit mixes.
