Just read this article that Philly is now the 8th most expensive place to be married, and that the average wedding costs $38,369 in the city.
I’m actually past the 38K mark now…yikes!
Are you guys on budget?

I was one of those brides that said, “I would never spend more than 15K on a wedding! Why, I never!”
Er…my budget is creeping towards 20K and I’m not even doing anything fancy! 🙁 Philadelphia really is expensive. I know it’s nothing compared to North Jersey/NYC where I grew up and I KNOW is expensive, but damn. I could buy a really nice car with that money. Or have a nice little down payment for a home.

@phillybride61513: My budget keeps going up… and up… and up…. it won’t stop!!
I originally wanted to do $21k… then it went to $25k… then to $30ish where it will stay. I added a DOC and a videographer among other things which made the budget increases.
I am hoping I can come under budget on the dj and I will try to cut a few unnecessaries if I can. I got my wedding dress for a steal which helped the budget a lot.

Well that is not encouraging but all that surprising either, I guess. $38,369! Woof, that is a LOT of money when you think about all of the other stuff you could do with it. I usually think in terms of travel – you could take a lot of fab trips with $38k.
I didn’t look at a ton of venues because we limited our search to center city and non-hotels. So many venues have required paired caterers that are very pricey – it can get very expensive very fast with a medium sized guest list.
@phillybride61513: Where is your reception? I’ve only heard you dish on your rehearsal.

@Andyisgreat: The reception is at The Hyatt at the Bellevue, up in the Rosegarden ballroom on the 19th floor. I’ve been obsessed with this location since I ate at XIX with Fiance like 6 years ago. Also, the church is St. Mark’s on 16th and Locust, which also has a hefty fee for us out-of-towners!
We’ve tried to cut corners with a DJ (instead of band), no videographer, and some other small things we’ve omitted.
Where is your wedding?

@phillybride61513: I LOVE XIX! :::backing out of the thread now lol::

@phillybride61513: I LOVE LOVE LOVE St. Marks!!! Such a beautiful church. Fiance and I attend there sometimes and we looked into getting married there but we waned my brother, who is a minister, to marry us and it wouldn’t work there. Such a beautiful building – you’re a lucky gal!
My ceremony and party are at College of Physicans.

@Andyisgreat: Oh, I’ve seen pics of a wedding at College of Physicans recently and it blew me away.
No joke, I’m not a bridey-bride, but I def get chills when I think about walking down the aisle of St. Mark’s.

- Wedding: October 2013 - The Down Town Club, Philadelphia
Yeah, that’s pretty much where we are cost-wise. When all is said and done, it will be close to a 40,000 wedding. Yikes!
But, it’s still cheaper than NYC (where I am originally from) or flying everyone out to Los Angeles (where we live now).
We’ve cut a few corners – no videographer, I was under budget on my gown, we rented FI’s tux instead of buying, etc…
But our guest list has gotten out of control (mostly due to my father, who is hosting the reception).
Anyway, yeah, that figure isn’t surprising!

Im not surprised at all! Our wedding budget started at about $45K (we are paying for everything on our own) but it has crept up to almost $60K when taking the honeymoon and everything into account. At this point, we can’t change anything and will not be going into debt over it, so we feel like we might as well just enjoy it. But yes…much more than i ever would have wanted to spend for one day…

@purplepie45: +1 on cost and paying for it ourselves. The honeymoon alone is 5K for us.
So when my mom said, “are you doing a brunch on Sunday?” I was like #UMMMMNO…unless you’re paying for it.
And when my Future Mother-In-Law said, “if people are going to be in the city Friday night, can we invite them to the rehearsal dinner too?” And again, I was like #UMMMMMNO.

This is why we had a Destination Wedding in Vegas. My dream venue was the penn museum, but since we wanted less than 50 guests it wasn’t feasible. and other places had stupid fees for being a small non typical wedding.
@phillybride61513: love love love the bellevue. my prom was there and it was pricy enough then (too many years ago). So worth the cost Im sure
Post # 14
@MASPA: wow, I can’t imagine a prom there…that is one fancy dance!
ouch… i’ve already passed this budget… :/
@purplepie45: we are in the same boat … close to 60k after all said and done.
@phillybride61513: rosegarden ballroom is beautiful! you have three more months to go. 🙂
Post # 16
@phillybride61513: it sure was! Food was good too (but you know that). It was tradition that my high school had senior prom there. My class was one of the last ones I think to do it. Once tickets broke 150/head I think the school backed out since less students could afford it. I could be making it up but I’m pretty sure since jr prom was at the ben franklin ballroom and now they go somewhere else.
