@MASPA:  Congratulations are in order perhaps? 🙂

Here are some general tips from a site & other sources I looked up when i was interviewing:

  • Be prepared (research)

  • Don’t smoke, chew gum, or eat but keep a glass of water handy (my mouth gets dry when I’m nervous).

  • Smile; it will project a positive image and will change the tone of your voice.

  • Speak slowly and enunciate clearly.

  • Use the person’s title (Mr. or Ms. and their last name.) Use their first name if they request it.

  • Don’t interrupt them.

  • Take your time – it’s fine to collect your thoughts.

  • Give short answers.

  • Finally, relax!

Good luck! 🙂 Let us know how it goes

@Mimoza:  +1

Also, try to watch your “ums” and other silence fillers like that. Don’t say “like” too much either.

definitely going to co-sign on having water handy (I had a coughing fit my last phone interview) and not to interrupt.  other than that, most in-person interview tips apply.

good luck!

make sure youre in a quiet location of course. i do staffing and phone interview 80 candidates a day….and the most annoying thing is background noise, shuffling papers in my ear or gernally acting like youre not paying attention and i have to repeat myself. good luck! im sure what i said should be common sense lol

Don’t ramble.  And answer the question…don’t skirt around it.

@MASPA:  Standing while you talk on the phone makes you sound stronger and more confident. In my experience whenever I have to get up nerve for a call I don’t want to make, I stand up. I also agree with the advice on smiling.

It is pretty similar to face to face interviews, except you are more apt to interupt because of the lack of body language. But just try to relax, have notes handy and just be natural!

It’s kind of silly, but dress like you’re going to a real interview. If you’re bumming on the couch in your pjs that’s how you’ll sound over the phone. If you’re sitting up in a desk chair or at a table (or standing per PP) in your suit or dress then you’ll sound prepared and ready over the phone. Also remember to smile. Your emotions always come through in your voice.
