If he called you to offer you the job, I would try and call him to decline it.  If you really can’t get ahold of him, then send an email as a last choice.

@ChicFoodist:  since he called, you should call back. Had he emailed, an email response would be fine. If you can’t find his phone #, you would email the assistant and ask for it. I’m a big believer in never burning any bridges professionally!

Phone is polite… who knows you might need that big deal connection another time!

@ChicFoodist:  Yeah I feel you, I dread calling in situations like this too!  But it will be over in less than 5 minutes, maybe less than 2 minutes, and then you’ll never have to worry about it again.  And you’ll know you did the mature and right thing and can pat yourself on the back.  Versus emailing and then stressing out all day waiting to hear what he emails you back.

Best to call back, unless he said otherwise. But if you can’t find the phone number then e-mail is okay.

Congrats! I know that must’ve taken a lot of courage for you to make that call. What you explained to us was very good, so I think he will understand.

@ChicFoodist:  Good for you! I’m a total phone-chicken too, so I’m really proud of you!
