I would think a close girlfriend would be able to get some nice shots for little to no cost?

I probably would but heck I’m the crazy lady that pays for professional photos of my dog!  I like good photography!

But I also like to find a good deal.  What kind of prices are you looking at?

@beachside:  I voted no, simply because what would I do with the photos? MAYBE put a couple in a scrapbook or something. Otherwise they’d be boxed away somewhere.

My wedding makeup artist had a pro at her baby shower, and the pictures were to die for. I don’t know that I would personally splash out for it (I’d rather put the money towards a shoot after the baby is born) but I think it would be really awesome if you have the extra money!

I am definitely going to do that, I love quality pictures! It just dpeends on how much you value photos.. when i see some polls on the boards about how much they spent on wedding photography Im amazed at how little most spent. we spent over 8k! But to me a good photographer can make any wedding look AMAZING! anyhoo i say do it .. esp these days w all the crazy baby bday decor ..people spend thousands on a babies bday when they won’t even remember it! .. Ill prob do this too tho hahah

EDIT: oh wait i totally misread that ..baby shower? no, wait till baby is born!

I say go for it. I think a pro can definitely capture the candid moments in a beautiful and well-composed way. Since you will have close family and friends there, I think it would be really great to get some pictures with those important people that is more than just look and the camera and say cheese. You will surely get more framable pictures to display in your home.

Are you spending a lot of time decorating and creating details? Is it super styled? Are there a bunch of friends or family going to be together for this occasion? Are photos really important to you or the mom to be? If the answer is yes to any of these then I would. Why not? Photography is perceived value, so are designer handbags/shoes/jeans, so are cars. It’s all comes down to how much you value it.
