I’ve been having someone problems with my photographer lately and I’m wondering if I should be worried. I picked this photographer because I love his style and he’s pretty well known. Whenever we talk, he’s really been a joy to work with but lately, he’s been a little MIA.
My engagement shoot is next week and I emailed him about some locations and it took a few days to get back to me. Usually he always emails me in 24 hours. When he finally did get back to me, he set up a phone call to chat. The time came and went and I didn’t hear from him. He emailed me back a few hours later apologizing and asking to reschedule.
Should I be concerned? We’re paying a lot of money to have him as our photographer and I’m worried this flakiness is going to affect our wedding as well.

I would be honest with him! You never know what might be going on. Something like “hey, you have been difficult to get a hold of, are you sure you have enough time in your schedule to accommodate my wedding?”

@fanshell: Based on his actions so far, I would have lost confidence in him.

We fired our DJ for that reason. We were suppose to get together a few times to discuss details and sign a contract and he either didn’t answer us or canceled more than once. We decided to find someone else because who needs the stress on their wedding day of wondering whether someone will show up or not. He was initially mad about it but not my problem. Go with your gut if something seems off maybe look for a different photographer.

@gracefull: This would be really concerning to me too! I would address it with him, I like what PP said about asking if he has enough time in his schedule to accommodate your wedding. Maybe he’s wrapping up a big project or something short-term is causing these issues. His response to your question will probably give you a good sense of whether to continue with him or find someone else!

Is it just this one week that he’s been flaky/less immediate with his responses?
I wouldn’t be too worried YET. Creatives that work freelance/gig type jobs can have very uneven schedules and work hours. They may have only a few projects for months and then suddenly they get a mass of clients all with similar deadlines. They also don’t necessarily work Monday – Friday or may have other shift work/obligations where they’re not at their computer all day.
Missing the meeting is the more concerning thing to me, especially since he missed the window entirely. So if he’s non-apologetic and/or it happens again then I’d talk with him about it.
