Our photographer is a friend/coworker… and I found out yesterday that she’s been in and out of the hospital over the weekend with a mysterious illness that the doctors can’t diagnose. I’m concerned for her health, obviously, but I’m also concerned that she’s supposed to shoot our wedding on the 8th!! We’ve already paid her in full, and she gave us such a good deal there is no way we’d be able to pay another photographer. We just can’t afford it. Plus, our wedding is next weekend! I’m not sure we’d even be able to book another photog on such short notice! I’m kind of having a mini-freak out about this. I know all I can really do is hope and pray she gets well, but… AHHHHH!
Hive hugs please? Advice perhaps?

Hive hugs! What are her symptoms? I think you pretty much said it — there’s not really anything you can do but pray she gets well in time. I might start putting feelers around though in terms of a backup photographer. Just in case.

If she’s a good friend/coworker, I’d definitely go visit, bring some flowers or a get well card, and tactfully ask her if she thinks (the docs too) that she’ll be able to do your wedding next week (is it contageous? Or are they mostly just diagnosing? or is she like, unable to function???). Honestly, she’ll likely have to call someone up to do the photographs for her, so you’ll probably get a substitute photographer(s) for the day of, and she’ll do all the post processing. I know my photographer had a clause saying she had the right to basically send a replacement.
It’ll ease your mind if you know she has a backup. I can’t imagine she’ll leave you high and dry!

Our photographer had the replacement clause in our contract too. She’d do everything possible to be there, but she knows other photographers of similar ability to be present if she can’t. You said this is a friend/co-worker so this may not be the case, but it doesn’t hurt to ask -and show some concern for her health issues.

If your contract has the replacement cause in it, then it would be up to her to find a replacement for you. Seeing as she’s in the hospital, it might be up to her husband, close relative, etc. to do this for you. I would check in as soon as possible with her. Of course you are concerned for her well being, but I do think she’d understand about the situation and your freaking out about it!
Let us know what happens!

I agree with the others. Most standard photography contracts state that if the photographer can’t make it, they have to send another that’s of the same standard and quality.
I would visit her in the hospital or at her home, bring flowers (as ejs4y8 suggested) and simply ask if she’ll be okay for the wedding. You definitely have a right to know! Just make it clear that of course, you’re worried about her overall health.
Gosh, this is definitly my worst nightmare! Hugs to you, and I hope it all works out!

We didn’t have an official written and signed contract, but I trust her, she is a friend, after all. And I know if she weren’t contagious, she’d be at work! I was going to go by her house on my lunch break, but I don’t want to risk catching whatever she has a week before my wedding! I have no fears of her leaving us “high and dry”, but it is something to kinda worry about!
