We had ours only for photos before the wedding, the ceremony, and the first two hours of the reception. I think that was plenty, and it worked out just fine. I don’t think any of our guests were sad that someone wasn’t taking their picture after a few hours of sweaty, tipsy dancing.

In summary, I’m not cheap, just a good host. 😉

Your photographer should stay through the entire contracted time. The contracted time should cover what ever time frame you want it to cover to get the photographs that you are seeking from your day.

It’s typical for them to leave after the big events are over, and typically this is shortly after the cake cutting or dessert hour.

As a photographer, I used to do unlimited and stay through the end of the reception. It was not needed at all, so now I do 9 hours, with up to three of those being at the reception (cocktail hour plus two hours of the reception). I highly recommend “front-loaded” coverage.

At the reception, you come in, do your first dance, have toasts, blessings, and dinner. Then after dinner, it’s parent dances, cake cut, general dancing for a little, bouquet and garter, exit shot, and then I take off after checking to make sure you are covered. That usually takes 2 hours.

If you’re having a send-off and want photos, I recommend earlier rather than later, since end of the night send-offs can sometimes have few tired guests left!

Mine was booked for 8 hours, which was not the entire wedding (they left around 9:30).  If you book for a certain amount of hours, and they still leave earlier than that, that’s not good, but if you can’t afford/don’t want to pay for extra time, definitely book strategically to cover the important stuff.

My photog stayed for the alloted time we paid them, which ended up being until the last 20 mins. The dancing shots we got were AMAZING, so yes, that extra time was well worth the extra $$ for us. Half my album is cool shots of everyone having a fabulous time – love it!
