My Fiance and I are eloping in Costa Rica and recently decided to move our wedding date up so I have been trying to book vendors.
I fell in love with a photographer and he is in our price range. I thought great! So I sent him an email basically saying: “Hello. are you available on _____? If you are, I’d appreciate a quote on your wedding packages and what the traveling costs would be for you to travel to _____.” (It’s about six hours away from him).
First Day: Automatic response- “I have received your email and will respond to you by tomorrow.”
Second Day: “Sorry for the delay, I’m really busy but I will reply to you by tomorrow.”
Third Day: Nothing.
Fourth Day: Automatic response again, except it states that he is available on our date. His wedding packages are attached and when opened they say “Hello, _____” in someone else’s name!
Here’s where I got flustered: He took four days to send me an AUTOMATIC response and DIDN’T EVEN REPLY to one of my questions!!! I thought he was taking four days to figure out what his traveling costs would be (which would be totally fine with me), but no, he took four days to send me an automatic response.
I just feel like if I am asking him to travel six hours to my wedding and I’m already getting failed promises (“I’ll reply to you by tomorrow”) from him and ignored questions (“What are the traveling costs?”) then how can I trust him to be at my wedding on time and give us our pictures back on time if it takes him four days to send me an automatic response?
I’m so disappointed. I really love his work, but I thought I would be of some kind of priority to him.
Bees, should I move on and look for a different photographer? Or am I just overreacting?

I would look for another photographer. I had similar communication issues with my photographer on the front end, and I wish I had severed the relationship before the wedding and found a new one. Ever since the wedding, it’s been a big headache to get our photos and our wedding album.
If communication is an issue, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the photos are, you’ll be saving yourself a HUGE headache in the long run.

You poor thing. I would look for a different photographer. I had to do this with my make-up artist. Beautiful work but, horrible customer service. I moved on and am happy and confident with my decision. I hope it works out or you find a wonderful new photographer. Best of Luck!!

This would irritate me enough to look for someone else. I know people get busy/overwhelmed with emails/work/etc…but personally, all the vendors I booked are the ones that got my email, and then called me. If I’m paying this much money, then I want to know we can communicate.

Definitely look for a new photographer! You haven’t even *paid* him yet and he’s responding like this? Imagine how he’ll be once he has your money and committment!

Thank you everyone!! So today he sent me an email for the traveling costs AND got my name right, lol.
I’m going to talk to my Fiance about it in a little while to see if we should go for him or not.

Just wanted to update quickly and say that the photographer had been traveling and that’s why we had the communication issues and everything is fine now. 🙂 He has been very prompt and helpful to me ever since he got back from the traveling.

that is so rude of him! still if i loved his work and the price was in my budget, i’d work around it. I did this with the car i booked for the wedding. The guy is a total douche and always takes ages to respond, and when he does, he doesn’t remember who i am and i have to explain AGAIN. i wanted to kick his but so badly but i really wanted to use his car because there was noone else with that kind of vehicles nowhere near me…
it upset me but hey… i’ll cope if i really want it.

Call Julie Comfort of Comfort Studios in Costa Rica if you decide to look for other photographers. Trust me. She has the best reputation there and she is so wonderful to work with. Not only will she write you back immediately, but she will help you plan everything, she’s American but lives there 365 days a year, and she will make you feel so at ease with everything. I felt like I was talking to a friend instead of a vendor even before I paid her and she never pressured me. Plus her pictures are incredible!

@ananeele: Thank you for the suggestion, but I really love my photographer’s work and he’s been great ever since we had that rough start. He always replies within two days and tells me if it will take longer and answers all of my questions. He’s been emailing me back and forth within two days for three weeks now! I am very happy with him and am looking forward to receiving the contract today. But again, thanks for the recommendation. 🙂
