banana86:  Yikes!  None of the above.  I just put down a deposit on my photographer for my elopement wedding (we’re having about 15 people) and the total cost to us is $650.  I didn’t chose a crappy photog, either.  She’s very good and has been on Style Me Pretty, Wedding Chicks, etc.

Yeah that seems very high for an elopement package. I found a photographer when we were planning on going away to elope who only wanted $900 for 3 hours, and her pictures were gorgeous

Where are you getting married? Perhaps some bees would be able to find a photographer more reasonable for such a short time

banana86:  I agree with PPs that it sounds really really high. The photographer I’ve been in contact with for a Paris elopement charges 875 euros for 3 hours, which is a bit less than $1000. Her photos are amazing.

I voted to hire the cheaper photographer. I don’t understand why you need a second photographer for candids unless he means he won’t change his shooting preferences and therefore while he’s doing posed shots a second photographer will have to capture your candids. In which case I’d look for a third option.

I found more photographers than I would have found in a typical search by asking other vendors for recommendations. Or can you look in neighboring towns?

banana86:  Where in the heck are you getting married?? I’m a wedding photog in a resort area, and while my elopement packages are probably more expensive than others in my area they aren’t even near that! While every photographer has the right to price however they feel best to meet not only their costs of doing busiess, but their standard of living, those prices are industry standards for a full day (8-10 hours) wedding package. I’m normally the first to encourage brides to not scrimp on photography but even I find that excessive. However, what is included in those packages? Is this just their time and digital files? Is an album included?

banana86:  Ah! I think those prices are all ridiculously expensive!

What I did was hire a photographer that is trying to get into the destination wedding business (she’s already a regular wedding photographer). I’m just paying for her flight and hotel. Just $750 because it’s an opportunity to expand her business so I’m getting a huge discount. Have you thought about looking into something like this?

My elopement photography package for 5 hours was only $1,600 and the photographer was amazing and the photos turned out so bright and beautiful. Our package included a disc with high res photos, but we get about 1,000 images and then the copyright release to print them wherever. I believe we get some prints as well in our package. I paid $400 extra in travel expenses (airfare, car rental, lodging) for him and I felt like the price was great for the quality of work. The studio had made it on the cover of the states bride magazine 4 years in a row. Having the photographer fly in worked wonderful because he got a chance to drive around the location and pick special spots for photos before the wedding. It all worked out great! But I would not be paying over $2,500 for elopement photos. thats just insane for a couple hours. Keep your options open, there are a lot of options out there.

edit: just saw your update. Sounds like you found a photographer that fit your vision. Hope it all works out great, congrats!

banana86:  Glad you went with your gut – if you love their work you won’t regret it! Another thing to consider, is the day of your wedding. If you’re getting married on a weekend, that could be part of the pricing issue. I actually won’t take an elopement on a weekend because finanically I can’t turn down a full priced wedding on a day I could book one – so of course if someone wanted to pay my normal rate for only a few hours of coverage that would be just fine!
