My fiance and I got engaged on new year’e eve last year and we are finally planning our destination wedding for June 2008. Since we are in San Francisco, it’s been hard to get recommendations from friends/family for vendors in Maui.
Does anyone out there know a reasonably-priced photographer who does interesting art/photojournalistic pics of the non-semi-erotic-lying-on-the-beach variety?
I’m also looking for a good coordinator who can help w/ partial planning. Any help would be wonderful!

Hi Ayu —
Sorry I can’t be of more help w/ Maui-specific recommendations, but I would recommend you take a look at this site: http://www.theweddingcafe.net — it is an Oahu-based business that is a great resource for brides in Hawaii. Many local coordinators and photographers are open to traveling inter-island, you’ll just have to negotiate with them about fees. If you’re for-sure on a venue, particuarly a hotel, you might try inquiring with them for the coordination services.
Hawaii Bride & Groom is a local magazine that would also have resources, though keep in mind that probably all of them are advertisers. Pacific Rim Weddings is another one that is actually based out of Maui. (Again, keep in mind that a lot of the listed resources are advertisers, so you will need to do your legwork to interview and seek out recommendations for your vendors.) Personally, I liked HB&G a little better for planning and seeing what I could actually do/get myself b/c it was more "realistic" and PRW featured more of the I-can-afford-$100K-weddings type of thing, but PRW is beautiful. A girl can always dream, right?

This website might be able to help you in your search:
According to that board, Lori Scott might be worth a look:

I’m getting married on Oahu and I really like my planner so far. She is reasonably priced, responsive, and on top of things. Not only that, but she has a good sense of design. Her name is Sandra Williams from Finishing Touch. Although she is based out of Oahu, it might be worth it to pay for the interisland travel fee and get someone good. Her website is http://www.finishingtouchhawaii.com. I believe the interisland travel costs are reasonable. As for photographer, you might want to check out Shawn Starr’s work. His full coverage for the day is $2,000. He is based out of Oahu.
Hope that helps.

Awe, I’d love to get married in Maui. My fiance took me there on vacation and proposed to me at sunset. The beach we were on has a great view of Lanai and Molakai, where the sun sets right between the two islands-very very romantic.
Good luck with your wedding plans there. Its a very romantic place!

I am getting married in September on the island of Oahu, and my photographer is pretty reasonable in his pricing and is super laid back. Not sure if he’d willing to travel to Maui, but he might! Please let me know if you want his contact info. My email is shawnali at gmail dot com.

Oh thanks for all the names & resources! I’m definitely going to check out everything everyone mentioned. I came across Tropical Maui Weddings from another source but it’s great to hear it’s recommended by others and will contact Lori for more info.
Yes, Pacific Rim Weddings has the most amazing wedding but you’re right about the $100K weddings-I really liked a photographer they featured but his least expensive package was my maximum budget and that didn’t include a single print…
I am thrilled to be getting married in a beautiful place like Maui and appreciate everyone’s input to help make it happen! Thanks guys!

The Hawaii board on the Knot has tons of recommendations. Check out the All Things Maui bio, it is a great resource. I have to recommend my photographer Shawn Starr. He’s based on Oahu but will travel to Maui for a fee. http://www.shawnstarr.com

OK no idea about how much he is, but I saw Gordan Nash’s portfolio a long time ago, and it still stuck with me. unfortunately I’m not getting married in Hawaii. You should definitely check him out.

LaShawn is a popular Maui photog….many Oahu photogs are willing to travel to Maui too. I really admire Frank Amodo and Shawn Starr. Also check out Visionari- they’ve shot some amazing Maui weddings.
Check out the AllThingsMaui bio for more suggestions.

I know of a photographer who gives a major discount to desitnation wedding brides. He is based in Washington State and would probably be willing to shoot your wedding if you pay travel costs.

I second Gordon Nash’s studio (he has several other photogs under him who are great too!)… they are doing our wedding the beginning of January. His studio has a few advantages:
– full on coordination of the ENTIRE day if you want it.
– you get the photos, so you don’t have to pay for pricey prints/books, you can do your own
– we are going with 2 hours of service, and then they take care of your licensing, minister, and flowers, and anything else you want to add on.
they are great, you can tailor the level of service to you, rather than the other way around… I am working with Joannes Earles as our “coordinator.” She is very nice, and knowledgeable with lots of recommendations for whatever you need!
