Yes, we store on backup drives separate from the computer, its very normal. what she said does imply the photos are on a bad drive and they are trying to recover them. They have services that do recovery. If she cant recover them Im sure she will do a reshoot/refund the money.

It does happen to the best of us sometimes. It also doesnt mean they will mess up your wedding photos, drives fail we do our best to avoid these things with extra backup etc.. but we are human and the best of the best gear/eqp can fail.

Well… it seems fishy to me that BOTH drives failed coincidentally.  Yes, things can happen, and even the most robust backup methods are subject to failure.  We have a main hard drive, an in house backup, an offsite backup, and a proofing gallery backup on finished files.

Go hire someone else for the wedding.  It is rare that both the main drive and back-up drives are bad unless they didn’t have a back-up drive to begin with and now is screwed!

Yeah, I’d think it would be REALLY rare that both drives would go simulatneously, but it’s certainly possible. If they were both hooked into her computer at the same time and some malfunction of the computer caused the failure, that would be the most likely scenario.

Unfortunately, I would not go trying to find another photographer for your wedding at this point. With a week to go, you’re really likely to be worse off with some last minute person, plus you’ll lose your deposit with the original photog. It sucks that that happened, but I would just pray it doesn’t happen again! I think you’ll be okay.

One or the other of the drives having issues with accessing files, I’d believe. Both at the same time? That’s pretty unlikely. I’m guessing there is something else going, like she didn’t make a back up in the first place and now can’t access her main drive, or she lost them, etc. That would make me pretty nervous, although I will say that it’s often possible to recover files off bad drives (I’ve done it many times myself, and there’s obviously data recovery specialists who do it) so while you might not have them in time, you may still get them in the end. Does it specify in your contract when you would have the pictures back to you? You may (post-wedding) want to see if she will refund part of your payment given this issue.

I’m wondering if the main drive somehow corrupted the files and the corrupted files were transferred/backed up to the backup drive.  For example, if I saved a file to a drive, the file then somehow got corrupted between the time I saved it and the backup job time, then the corrupted file would be the one backed up to the backup drive.  Does that make sense?

Is your photographer otherwise a reputable photographer?  Does he/she have good reviews?  If so, it is probably just an unfortunate event with the drives.

At least it was your engagement session, and not your wedding.  You can’t have bad luck twice with the same photographer, can you?

Good luck hun!
