I have a very small budget for photography and am looking on Craigslist for options. I am very conflicted because many of them offer very reasonable prices and products. However, how reliable, experienced and professional are they? Has anyone have any experience with advertised photographers on San Diego/OC Craigslist or any recommendations? My budget is $1-1.5K. I know this is tiny but I come from a family of photographers, both Dad and Aunt are professional wedding photographers and the thought of me hiring one and paying for one is a touchy subject. They obviously cannot take the wedding pictures and so I need to hire someone who will be unbiased and work for me, take modern, fun, artistic and photojournalistic pictures….Please Advise!

how many hours do you need? i know there are some who start around 1k for about 4 hours. I don’t know much about this photographer: http://www.mahapix.com/index2.php, except she was very nice when I contacted her for a quote. Her prices start at 12k and beleive it’s a hunsband/wife team.

we found a photographer on craigslist. her work is awsome, and super reasonable! she has her own company but was just advertising on craigslist. hopefully we use her, since we are on a budget too.

Why is it a touchy subject to hire a wedding photographer? If you have family members in the field then they certainly understand the importance of it and the need to find a good one. Do they live in the area as well? If so, they may have friends in the industry that they can recommend.
Personally I’m leary of anything from craigslist because you really don’t know what you’re going to get, but I’ve heard some people find great deals there. It’s hit or miss – which is somewhat scary for something like your wedding. I would suggest finding a photographer you like and ask them what they can do with your budget. A good photographer would be able to work with you…maybe forego a package deal and get a custom quote for less hours, no album and no engagement session? Goodluck 🙂

I think if you can find someon who is willing to meet you in person and show you their past work it’s the same as any photographer you find via their website. Good luck.

Thanks for all of your feedback.
It’s a touchy subject in my family to hire a photographer because somewhere in their minds, they THINK they will be able to shoot my photos, especially my aunt. My dad asks me why in the world would I spend money for a photographer when the resource is in house. My perspective is different. I need someone who is unbiased and will take direction because they work for me. I don’t know how to tell my Dad and Aunt what to do….besides, their style is much more traditional and I’m looking for contempory photojournalistic style.
Please leave some recommendations of any photographers you may have had good experiences with.

I know these guys http://www.cscyrusmedia.com are good and do weddings for less than $1000. That doesn’t include many prints at all, but they give you all the pictures on a DVD.
