I have been negotiating with a wedding photographer and was a little surprised at his payment terms. He expects to be paid for 2/3 of the work before the wedding day. I think it’s fair to pay a 1/3 deposit, and more on the day of, with a final installment after the wedding. What’s your experience been? Thanks for any insight.

Almost all of our vendors need to be paid in full before the wedding day…which makes sense when you think about it. They don’t want to perform a service and then get stiffed afterward…it’s our wedding but it’s also their livelihood. So, I think that’s fair, and actually pretty standard. As long as you sign a contract, and get EVERYTHING in writing….I think it’s fine. But who knows, this is the only wedding I have ever planned! So, there’s a chance that my vendors could be atypical. Hope that helps!

My photographer requires a $400 deposit at the time of booking (to be applied to the package amount). The balance of the package amount is then due two weeks prior to the day of the event. The fee for any extra prints we decide to purchase is due at the time of purchase.

My photographer had a 1/4 deposit due to hold the date, 1/2 due a month before, and the final 1/4 due a week after, before pictures are received.

Our photographer, Erica Berger, requires half to reserve the date and half to be paid on the day of the wedding.

We had to finish paying for everything two weeks before the wedding. It seems standard, but I also was a little nervous about paying off ALL of our vendors before they’d showed up to do their work for us. I’d recommend you just check the references.

My photographer required 40% for booking, 40% 2 weeks prior and 20% when we pick up the DVD after the wedding!
So it seems standard! I like the fact that I am not paying 100% prior though!
